ASM Leviasynth Update: ASM Responds, Synth Community Cries in Unison
[13 January 2025] ASM CEO Glen Darcey has responded to the ASM Leviasynth rumors. Maybe grab a hanky because it’s disappointing news.
ASM Leviasynth Update
A few days ago we reported on the trademark filing of the ASM Leviasynth, a possible new synthesizer from Hydrasynth maker Ashun Sound Machines. With NAMM 2025 coming right up, it seemed the perfect time to get excited about a possible new instrument from the team behind one of the best new synthesizers of recent years.
Now ASM CEO Glen Darcey has taken to the official Official ASM Hydrasynth Group on Facebook to address those rumors head on. If you were hoping for a Hydrasynth follow up, you’re not going to like what he has to say.
“The synth community rumor mill is pretty funny,” he wrote. “We registered a couple of names we thought we might use on future things. Of course, the internet being the internet, nothing turns into something and then the feedback loop grows.”
Why bother registering a name that you might not use? Darcey addressed this in a response to a comment: “When you come up with a name you really like, you protect it, even if you don’t have a new product coming out with that name. So many names are already protected or used in other related products that naming is the hardest part of development in a lot of ways.”
So no Leviasynth. At least not for now. So what will ASM be showing at NAMM? That remains to be seen…
ASM Leviasynth: Trademark Filings Suggest Big Follow-up to Hydrasynth Coming
[10 January 2025] Does Ashun Sound Machines have a new synth on the way? Trademark filings in the US and Europe for the ASM Leviasynth say… maybe!
ASM Leviasynth
Ashun Sound Machines (ASM if you’re nasty) flipped the synthesizer world on its head when it released the original Hydrasynth in 2019. Packed with a powerful digital sound engine and backed by the pedigrees of its founders Glen Darcey (formerly of Arturia) and ex-Elektron Daniel Troberg, it became an overnight success. ASM followed it up with three more models plus a number of limited edition re-releases, but the company has yet to follow it up with a sequel synth.
Is all of that about to change?
ASM Leviasynth Trademark Filings
It has now come to light (via Reddit, of course) that ASM parent company Medeli Electronics has filed two trademark claims for the name and logo, Leviasynth, one in the United States with the United States Patent And Trademark Office and another in Europe with the European Union Intellectual Property Office. Medeli filed them on April 8, 2024 and April 9, 2024, respectively.
If I’m reading the pages correctly, the US trademark is still pending while the European one was granted on August 20. If anyone is knowledgeable about such things, please let me know in the comments.
Medeli previously registered trademarks for ASM Ashun Sound Machines as well as Polytouch, ASM’s proprietary keybed with polyphonic aftertouch.
ASM Leviasynth at NAMM 2025?
It’s about time that ASM releases a new synthesizer. It could even be a drum machine, possibly based on the Hydrasynth sound engine. Given the name Leviasynth, though, I’m guessing a big, new synthesizer. The original Leviathan, the clear inspiration for the name, is a Biblical sea monster and is often applied to any big sea creature, like whales. So I’m thinking… something big?
Hopefully the Leviasynth is far enough is development that we’ll be able to see it at NAMM 2025 later this month, either as a finished product or in prototype form. Assuming that it’s even happening.
No matter what, I’m excited to find out more.
