Audient iD48: A New Flagship 8-channel Audio Interface
The new flagship of Audient's iD series interfaces.
The Audient iD48 is a new 24 x 32 rack-mountable USB-C audio interface built to meet pro standards, with 8 Audient console mic preamps.
Now that native processing technology has raced ahead, audio interfaces with onboard DSP systems don’t carry quite the same weight as they once did. This opens up the market for new industry standards, with manufacturers like Audient ready to take up the mantle.
Audient iD48
The iD48 is everything a home studio owner could want, with all the connectivity standards used by producers and engineers in pro studios and live sound situations. Its sleek, minimalist design makes it a sight to behold, with its textured metal front panel and understated looks.
Like the rest of the iD interface range, the iD48 is equipped with Audient’s mic pres from the ASP8024-HE recording console, with its high-quality op-amp circuitry. The iD48 gives you eight individually controlled preamps, with the potential to add another 16 via S/PDIF, ADAT, or SMUX.
The front panel is purposefully sparse and free from the monster LED screens we often see on rackmount interfaces. Instead, there is an assignable metering section, with quick access buttons for talkback and switching to your second pair of studio monitors.
If you’re planning to use a patchbay, or another signal routing system like a summing mixer, the iD48 is equipped with D-Sub connections for its main I/O. This covers analogue-to-digital inputs, line outputs, and insert sends/returns.
Besides functioning as an audio interface, which is controllable from the iD Mixer app, the iD48 is also a pro monitor controller. There are main and alt speaker outputs, as well as a pair of independent headphone preamps with enough gain to drive headphones rated up to 600 Ohms. Also, by routing some of the additional outputs, you can easily create monitor mixes for artists with an external headphones distributor.
So, what did Audient leave out? While the iD series interfaces are not MIDI-equipped, there will still be a sphere of users left wondering why the iD48 doesn’t have MIDI I/O. The overall design and workflow is impeccable, with straightforward access to controls. However, small details like an extra USB-C port would have been a nice touch.
