Audio-Technica’s AT-SP3X are compact speakers that some might call bookshelf speakers. The Japanese manufacturer tends to straddle the line between professional studio and lifestyle products, and this may not be as straightforward as it seems at first glance. Let’s take a closer look at the speakers, which can also be operated wirelessly.

Audio-Technica AT-SP3X active speakers with Bluetooth

Audio-Technica’s AT-SP3X compact speakers are an exciting blend of hi-fi and studio.

Designed specifically for wireless setups, the AT-SP3X can be quickly and easily connected via Bluetooth to a wide range of equipment, including the recently launched AT-LP70xBT turntable. The multipoint pairing function is very handy, allowing the active speakers to be paired with two Bluetooth devices at the same time.

Of course, there is also a cable connection, but Audio-Technica sticks to RCA. While the speakers are quite traditional ‘hi-fi’ in this respect, there are a few other interesting features in addition to Bluetooth, but more on that after the video.

More Information

Audio-Technica’s AT-SP3X monitor speakers also feature DSP technology for optimum sound tuning. Sound comes from a 3-inch woofer/midrange driver and a 1.1-inch tweeter. Despite its small size, the AT-SP3X is said to have a powerful sound. And according to the manufacturer, the sound is well balanced.

Are Audio-Technica’s AT-SP3Xs suitable for studio use? Well, I wouldn’t call them studio monitors, but I don’t think they’d be completely unsuitable for a few short sessions with a laptop and DAW. We’ll have to wait for the reviews to answer that question. But I can’t help thinking of speakers like the JBL Control One, which are also called bookshelf speakers, but can still be found in some home studios. I also mixed on them in my first home studio.

However, as far as I can tell, it is not completely wireless, as the two speakers are connected with a classic (and 2 metre long) speaker cable. This is included, along with the power supply and three adapters for international use.

Audio-Technica’s new speakers have a power switch, an LED indicator and a volume control on the side.
