Audio-Technica ATH-R-Series: Accessible Open-back Headphones
A range of affordable open-back headphones.
The new Audio-Technica ATH-R-Series includes three new models of open-back headphones for music production, mixing, and mastering.
Audio-Technica is known for creating high-quality audio solutions that are accessible to a wide range of users. DJs, producers, and engineers have trusted the M-Series closed-back headphones for years, and now Audio-Technica aims to do the same with the R-Series open-back headphones
Audio-Technica ATH-R-Series: ATH-R70xa
The top-of-the-range ATH-R70xa is an extremely lightweight design, weighing under 200g, minus the cable. Handbuilt at Audio-Technica’s Machida facility, the ATH-R70xa uses 45 mm dynamic drivers, delivering a frequency response of 5 – 40,000 Hz.
One unique design aspect is the independent dual-connecting cable for optimal stereo orientation. However, with a 470 ohms impedance rating, the ATH-R70xa will require a powerful headphone preamplifier for optimal performance.
Audio-Technica ATH-R-Series: ATH-R50x
The ATH-R50x uses 45 mm drivers in its design, delivering a frequency response of 5 – 40,000 Hz. The ATH-R50x provides a nice middle ground in the R-Series with a 50-ohm impedance rating. This means that you’ll get great performance on a wide range of consumer or professional audio devices, without necessarily requiring a dedicated headphones preamp.
Audio-Technica ATH-R-Series: ATH-R30x
Arriving this Spring, the entry-level ATH-R30x makes open-back headphones more accessible than ever. Equipped with 40 mm drivers, the ATH-R30x provides a frequency range of 15 – 25,000 Hz and delivering a sound profile with “well-defined lows, transparent mids, and smooth, extended highs“, according to the manufacturer. Like the ATH-R50x, the impedance rating is really low (36 ohms), so you can run the ATH-R30x on any audio device.
Price: $99 MSRP
