Joyeux Noël et bonne année from those lovely folks in Grenoble! A rather lovely free instrument can be yours right now in the shape of Augmented Mallets Play, compliments of Arturia!

Arturia’s Augmented series of instruments has delivered some fascinating sounds that blur the line between acoustic and synthetic. By blending samples with their powerful synthesis software, the Augmented series delivers a pleasant change from more “traditional” acoustic libraries.

Augmented Mallets Play

Now, just in time for Xmas, Arturia has released Augmented Mallets Play, a new free instrument that applies their Augmented concept to tuned percussion. Featuring instruments such as the marimba, vibraphone and celeste, Arturia has applied cutting-edge synthesis to deliver some truly organic tones.

All of this is delivered in a beautifully simple interface, one that graces every Augmented instrument. The large central control morphs smoothly between an acoustic and synthetic layer. The smaller controls that surround it draw their controls from Analog Lab.

Morphaliscious

There are specific controls for Color, Time and Motion, plus reverb and delay and two FX controls. The morphing feature is where a lot of the magic happens, with instruments taking on a whole new life when blending from A to B.

Augmented Mallets Play rewards experimentation with these controls and delivers tones that go beyond regular mallet-based sounds. Some patches are smooth, pad-like and mellow, others punchy and metallic. It’s a really inspiring tool and it’s all free!

It comes with 50 built-in presets but you’re free to make your own! Navigating the library is easy with Arturia’s customary plugin browser.

More Information

But hurry! Augmented Mallets Play is only available between December 19th 2024 and January 2nd, 2025. After that, I have no further information as to whether it will become paid for or if it is a precursor to a “full-size” Augmented Mallets.
