Avalon VT-737sp 40th Anniversary Limited Edition
If you’re new to the world of high-end channel strips, the 737 is a tube preamp, opto compressor, and a 4-band EQ in one unit. The design uses Sovtek 6922 tubes, with two tubes in the input stage, one in the compressor circuit, and another in the output stage. Although it’s primarily used as a mic preamp, the 737 can take a wide range of input signals.
Besides providing a 40 dB gain range for microphones, you can also work with balanced and unbalanced line signals, and there is a high-gain switch that adds an extra 18 dB boost when you need it. The compressor might not be as revered as the 1176 or LA-2A, but it’s easy to use, and you can place it before or after the EQ in the signal chain or bypass it completely.

The 4-band EQ is one of the most exciting features, with ways to precisely shape your vocal sound on the way in. This means that you’ll have the upfront transformer sound of the clean preamp, the dynamics of the tube circuitry, and the ability to control the frequency range and tone of each vocal take.
Overall, the 737 is still very much relevant as a professional recording tool, even after 40 years. While the competition gets serious in this price range, it has that uniquely clean Avalon sound that preserves vocal nuances, making the recordings perfect for post-production software like Melodyne, Little AlterBoy, and Auto-Tune.

One response to “The Avalon VT-737sp Celebrates its 40th Anniversary this Year”
It might be 40th anniversary of the company Avalon Design, founded in 1985, but there’s no way this 2U channel strip model has existed since then. I think the earliest original VT373 ones with silver front and purple knobs were introduced in the late 90’s. The cost about £1800 inc vat back then.
