b3 UltraModern 24: A headless guitar that goes to the extremes
The ultimate headless guitar?
b3 introduces the UltraModern 24, 24-fret, bolt-on neck headless guitars loaded with Fishman Fluence pickups and Sophia vibrato systems… Is this the last word in headless guitars?
b3 UltraModern
B3’s new range of bolt-on neck UltraModern models isn’t cheap, but that reflects some some serious hardware. Like Fishman Fluence pickups, along with a Sophia 2:92 vibrato with Global Tuning System. Looks as though B3 is intent on pushing the boundaries modern headless guitar design with these ST-style guitars.
Sophia Trem System
Not heard of the Sophia 2:92 trem system? It’s pretty unique! It has what Sophia calls the Global Tuning System, so no moving parts as such. It’s a solid hunk of metal, so be prepared to adjust this either using the twin trem posts or shimming the saddles. That all sounds like a lot of hassle to me, but apparently it helps with tone transference and overall performance.
Fishman Fluence loaded
The Fishman Fluence pickups come with a push/pull tone pot, a five-way pickup selector, and a set of mini-toggles to change pickup voicings. Check out the list of available settings below. That gives players a whole heap of tones to experiment with. And the middle single coil pickup has a 3db boost option to help it keep up with those humbuckers. Nice.
Open Core Classic Humbucker Neck position
Voice 1: Vintage P.A.F. – The popular P.A.F. neck tone
Voice 2: Clear, airy chime — This is a Fluence-exclusive neck tone
Voice 3: A clear, vintage-voiced single coil
Open Core Classic Humbucker Bridge position
Voice 1: Vintage P.A.F. — A calibrated vintage PAF bridge humbucker tone at the perfect output level.
Voice 2: Classic Hot Rod — A hot-rodded bridge humbucker tone without all the baggage.
Voice 3: A slightly overwound single coil
Extreme Custom Headless
These models are also highly customisable with a wide range of options, like AAAAA flame maple tops, gold hardware, hollow body, hollow body with sound hole – or perhaps a korina neck and body. All these upgrades will bump up the price, so be prepared to pay top dollar for a fully customised example.
All this makes up for some pretty extreme, but amazingly well-specified headless guitars and you can pretty much specify them how you like. I’ve owned a few headless guitars in my life and I get why they are popular with some players. If you have the resources available, go crazy and order yourself the ultimate headless axe!
RRP – starting from USD 5325
