Bastl Instruments THYME+ is the second generation of the ingenious THYME digital tape delay box, which was originally released in 2017 and discontinued much too early. The new THYME+ brings back the creative tape delay with all its “robot-driven” modulation goodness.

When THYME came out in 2017, it quickly became a favorite of electronic performers thanks to its inspiring workflow and creative possibilities. With extensive modulation capabilities driven by so-called “robots”, it delivered a never-ending stream of unique delay effects and exciting rhythms.

Unfortunately, Bastl Instruments had to discontinue THYME way too early. But now it’s back! In time for Superbooth 24, the Czech manufacturer has announced the new and improved THYME+.

More Information

The concept and basic layout remain the same. However, the new version lives in a sturdy metal enclosure with larger knobs. They’ve also updated the panel to give it a somewhat more grown-up appearance.

Furthermore, Bastl Instruments says that the new THYME+ features a better audio codec and updated firmware. There are also a couple of changes in terms of connectivity. The new version features dedicated input jacks for the left and right channels. The predecessor’s DIN MIDI ports have been replaced by a TRS MIDI input. Not everybody is going to love this, but I do think it makes sense considering the kind of setup this kind of box is often used in.

Other than that, the new THYME+ offers everything that made the previous version so great. It’s a digital tape delay emulation with multiple playback heads and nine adjustable parameters. Each parameter has a dedicated “robot” for modulation. These can be various kinds of LFOs, envelope followers, or external CV. Other features include randomization, rhythmic quantization of both the delay time and the robots, high-pass and low-pass filters, and a FREEZE button for tape loops. In addition to this, there’s a 32-step sequencer for sequencing presets.
