The Abelha, named after the Portuguese word for “bee”, is heavily influenced by Tropicália a musical current of the late 1960s, in which various traditional Brazilian styles (e.g. Bossa Nova, Samba, Baião) merged with foreign influences including Psychedelia, Pop, Rock.

Fuzz Modes

Abelha offers three distinct fuzz modes, which are selected via the mini toggle switch in the middle of the pedal.

  • Pollen” (dust) delivers a sagging and pointed sound that is reminiscent of a germanium fuzz with an empty battery.
  • Nectar” (nectar) offers a round, voluminous sound.
  • Honey” (honey) delivers moderate gain and an impressive versatility.

With the “Buzz” and “Loud” controls, the fuzz intensity and the output volume are set, while the EQ with the “HI” and “LO” controls enables precise sound tuning.

Tropical mode

The “Tropical Mode” takes you directly into the psychedelic realms of the tropics with its high-pass filter. Activate it by double pressing the foot switch or holding down the switch to activate the effect for a short time. With three different foot switch profiles, you can adjust the speed of the instantaneous function to your taste.

According to the manufacturer, Abelha builds a bridge between old-school charm and modern musical innovation and is intended to offer a wide range of fuzz sounds. And by the way, it looks awesome, as usual from Beetronics. This pedal will stand out on every pedal board.

Each Abelha pedal is carefully made in California, USA, and with all Beetronics pedals, we now expect something extra special in terms of aesthetics. This latest release certainly does not disappoint and I will say that I think it looks spectacular. The attention to detail in the design is beyond what many pedal makers put out and makes it stand out from the crowd.
