Beetronics FX OverHive guitar pedal: Sweet as honey?

Beetronics FX have announced a new pedal called the OverHive. It’s the latest in the company’s line-up of chic-looking guitar effects pedals, which all have that ‘bee’ association in their naming and styling. And they’re all hand-made, too, which puts the not-so-sweet price tag into perspective.

Specialising in hand-made products, Beetronics has previously launched two other models with the WhoctaHell Low Octave Fuzz and the OctaHive Hi Gain Fuzz. Now their series is expanded with the new OverHive Medium Gain Overdrive pedal.
We first saw this American pedal builder’s effects last year and the attention to detail was astounding, with everything bespoke, even down to the unique PCB boards. It looks like the new OverHive is in the same vein. The case is decorated with a beige lacquer, which makes it look artificially aged – nicely done. The unique design is also carried on inside the hand-wired pedal, with the two circuit boards arranged in the form of a bee and a honeycomb!
Beetronics say the Overhive produces a “round and warm” medium-gain drive based on the kind of “breakup” drive you get from cranking an amp.
The controls are as follows: a footswitch switches it on and off, the Body switch adds more low end, the Hive Switch makes the sound richer or thinner, the Honey control adjusts the gain or the degree of distortion, the Tone Control attenuating the sound character and finally a Master Volume.
The sounds in the video sound promising and the pedal is quite flexible, although perhaps not “extremely” so as Beetronics claim in their marketing. The OverHive pedal is hand-made in the US, with fantastic attention to aesthetics. The price of 230 USD also shows that we are definitely moving in boutique circles. If it sounds as good as it looks, though, I’m sure they will make plenty of honey with this little bee!
