Befaco Fx Boy Gameboy Cartridge based effects module
Befaco’s bonkers cartridge-based FX Boy hot swappable effects module is officially released and comes with seven cartridges from very cool places.
Update 23rd September 2023
The FX Boy was officially released at the Barcelona Modular Day. It will be available for sale from the 18th October for €450 assembled or €360 for the kit version. It ships with all seven cartridges.
The full roster of effects is physically hosted in a hot-swappable game cart and designed by a different manufacturer: Touell Skouarn with Skuara, a harsh fuzz with overdrive, Instruo with micro Phaser, a two-flavoured Phaser, Feedback modules with a vintage Flanger, XOR with FXGirl, a digital double effect module: Delay + Granularizer, Making sound machines with an analogue Wave folder, Tesseract with a bit crusher and Befaco Trash distortion!
There is CV control over a couple of parameters and EQ for a bit of shaping.
The demos were a bit hit-and-miss during the live stream but you can get a fair idea what’s going on:

Article from Superbooth 2023:
Fx Boy
Fx Boy is essentially a multi-effects module for Eurorack with CV controllable parameters and a built-in EQ section. The key element of hilarious genius is that each effect has been programmed onto a removable Gameboy cartridge. So if you want a new effect, simply swap the cartridge.
I can’t quite decide if that’s brilliant or not. I mean, why bother with SD cards or USB sticks when you can enjoy the old-school chunkiness of a Nintendo cart?
The cartridges have been made in collaboration with Feedback modules, Making sound Machines, Tesseract, Touel Skouarn, and XOR electronics. Befaco says we can expect old-fashioned flangers, aggressive folders, dirty bit crushers, fuzz galore and trashy distortions!
It’s interesting that you have CV control over everything including the wet/dry mix and the bands of EQ. You don’t often get tone controls like that on a module either.
At the time of writing, I haven’t seen it in action but I imagine Superbooth will reveal all. It should be available in the summer.
