Behringer Octavia Octave Fuzz: The Sixties’ Legend Revived

We kind of knew it was coming, but, still, it’s quite a beast! The Octavia Octave Fuzz from Behringer brings the sound of the sixties back. Modeled after the Tychobrahe Octavia, this pedal emulates the sound of Hendrix, Jeff Beck, Stevie Ray Vaughan and Kenny Wayne Shepherd.
Where the Octavia Originates From
The very first Octavia was built for none other than Jimi Hendrix by his guitar tech Roger Mayer in the late sixties. It quickly became an integral part of his psychedelic sound, along with the uni-vibe. After Hendrix passed away, the company Tychobrahe started producing a limited number of pedals. These quickly became highly sought-after effects.
Compared to other octave fuzz effects, the Octavia Octave Fuzz is quite a bit more unruly. But that’s exactly what gives the effect its unique character. Its sound is all over “Purple Haze”, “Little Wing,” “One Rainy Wish,” and “Little Miss Lover.” (Source). And while there has been no shortage of Octavia emulations over the years, Behringer throws their hat into the octave fuzz ring with this version.

The company has opted for the original’s no-nonsense approach. You just get controls for volume and boost, which allows you to dial in the intensity of the fuzz. This pedal is meant to play well with both single-coils and humbuckers, so it’s a pretty versatile effect.
Judging by the demo video, the Octavia Octave Fuzz can be played dynamically, so depending on your guitar’s output level and how intense you play, you get a wide range of sounds. Its all due to the pedal’s all-analog, silicone-based circuitry.
When switching pickups and playing styles, the effect can get you anywhere from subtle overdriven hums to total sonic annihilation. Behringer even offers a little trick to dial in a very specific sound:
A great way to play with OCTAVIA OCTAVE FUZZ is to set the fuzz knob to about 10 o’ clock, switch to your neck pickup and play up on the 12th fret. You’ll get some pretty cool, chirpy octaves with just the right amount of distortion underneath that you can bring out right when you need it.
How much does the Behringer Octavia Originates Cost?
Given Behringer’s approach to anything music-related, it’s no surprise that this one is pretty affordable. The pedal is listed at £59.00.
