The Behringer RD-78 Breaks Cover
Can You Feel It, Coming In The Air?
After a typically long gestation period, it seems Behringer’s RD-78 has finally made it into production!
The Behringer RD-78 has finally broken cover and will be available to order in the next day or so. Finally delivering on a product that was first teased a few years ago, the RD-78 sets out to emulate the classic Roland CR-78, the world’s first programmable drum machine.
Such was the impact of the CR-78, it transcended the typical organ accompaniment wooden box and allowed users to program their own beats via an extra add-on device. Its sounds were still somewhat mired in the old analogue style, but there were hints of what was to come.
The Behringer RD-78
Now Behringer, in typical Behringer style, has taken the essence and sounds of the original and plopped them into a much more convenient box with modern features to boot. For starters, programmability is performed right in the box, no add-on required.
Looking very much like a mini 808, with its x0x style sequencer, those unmistakable sounds are now easily accessed and programmed in a familiar interface on the RD-78. Every sound has its own volume pot, and there are switches for the variation sounds.
Variations and Connections
Talking of variations, all the fill features are here, along with Fade In and Out. There are 34 preset patterns and the sequencer can chain patterns into songs up to 250 bars. There’s also a handy drum mute feature that allows you to drop out sounds without messing with the individual volume controls.
On the rear, there are 10 individual outs, a Mix out, pedal control jacks, 5-pin MIDI In and Out and USB. There are also Sync In and Out connections and a headphone jack on the top of the unit.
More Information
The Behringer RD-78 will retail for €179 and is available to order soon.
