Behringer STEPS is the next module “heavily inspired” by a Mutable Instrument design. As a Stages clone, STEPS is a versatile six-stage function generator that lends itself to a wide variety of modulation tasks.

It’s only been a few weeks since Behringer announced SWORDS, a clone of MI Blades. And the series continues: STEPS is a carbon copy of Stages, a hugely flexible modulation module that can be a multi-stage envelope, complex LFO, sequencer, or anything in between.

More Information

Depending on how you patch the gate inputs, the six segments can be grouped into complex shapes. You can use all six stages individually, or combine them to build multi-stage envelopes or sequences. Each segment offers a choice of Ramp, Hold, and Step modes, which are the building blocks of complex modulation curves.

Each segment has a small knob for Shape/Time, a Mode button, a Time/Level slider, and a corresponding CV input. There’s also a gate input per segment, as well as, of course, an output. Multi-color LEDs help to keep an eye on the movements of the output voltages.

Just like MI Stages, Behringer STEPS lets you chain up to six identical modules to create insanely complex modulation curves with up to 36 stages.

The module is 14 HP in width and draws 100 mA at +12 V and 30 mA at -12 V.

Price and Availability

You can now order Behringer STEPS from Thomann* for $102 / £98 / €119. According to Behringer, the module has started shipping from the factory, so it shouldn’t be too long before it shows up at the dealer.
