Behringer Surges: The Budget Mutable Ripples Eurorack Remake Is Now Available
Let it flow.
Behringer Surges is a liquid-smooth filter module for your Eurorack rack rig based on the Mutable Instruments Ripples. You won’t believe the price.
Behringer Surges
Back in spring of 2023, Behringer revealed three Eurorack modules in a Facebook post. One was Four LFO and two were Mutable Instruments remakes, Chaos (Mutable Instruments Marbles) and Surges, which redoes Mutable’s Ripples Liquid Filter. Surges is finally available some 18 months later – and it appears to be worth the wait, at least for the price.
Liquid Liquid
The 8HP Surges is based on open-source designs for Ripples, which is an all-analog multimode filter module. Famous for its smooth and liquid sound, it offers simultaneous lowpass, bandpass, and highpass outputs, with switchable 12dB/Oct and 24dB/Oct slopes for the lowpass and bandpass.
Along with knob control over cutoff and resonance, you also get CV inputs for the resonance and cutoff, the latter with its own attenuverter. There’s also a V/Oct input so you can track the filter like an oscillator.
Additionally, there are two inputs, one at unity gain and one with its own gain knob for soft clipping. The two inputs are mixed together. Lastly, there’s voltage-controlled gain for the lowpass output, letting you externally control the level of the LP signal.
Pricing and Availability
The original Mutable Ripples filters are widely regarded as having a beautiful sound, reminiscent of the Roland Jupiter-8 and SH synths. At this price point, it’s really a no-brainer.
Behringer Surges is now available to buy at Thomann* for $39 / £37 / €45.
