[August 31, 2024] Behringer has released the Firmware Update 2.0 for its analogue polysynths UB-Xa D and UB-Xa (keyboard version), which adds new features and enhancements. You can now download and install the update via the SynthTribe app (see the manufacturer’s website).

OS Update 2.0 for Behringer Synthesizers

The new Firmware Update 2.0 for Behringer’s UB-Xa and D synthesizers brings a host of new features and enhancements that significantly expand your creative freedom. Of particular note is the ability to store and recall patches with even more detail. This includes the ability to save atrophy profiles as well as precise filter, VCO, VCF and LFO settings. The ability to save atrophy profiles in particular has been requested by many users and shows that Behringer is responding to the needs of the synth community.

The new update also allows the filter resonance to be adjusted more precisely. This opens the door to detailed sound shaping that was previously impossible. There are also new modulation modes for the Envelope Generator, which greatly increase flexibility. The new modes include Flip, Retrigger, Repeat, Loop and Legato, all of which add different dynamic effects to the sound.

Another exciting new feature is the expanded modulation matrix. With additional destinations and sources, parameters can be modulated in even more versatile ways, greatly enhancing the creative process. Behringer has also improved the synthesiser’s dual mode and aftertouch, resulting in a more intense and expressive playing experience. Improvements to SysEX and oscillator settings also ensure smoother operation.

In addition to these functional enhancements, there are also general performance improvements. Improved global transposition and enhanced live performance options make the UB-Xa and D synthesizers even more stage-ready and easier for musicians to use live. A number of bugs have also been fixed that previously affected the musical experience. For example, there is no longer a ‘dull’ sound when triggering the envelope generator, and the modulation wheel now works properly, allowing precise control of LFO modulation.

All in all, the 2.0 firmware update represents a significant evolution of the UB-Xa keyboard and desktop synthesiser, offering a wealth of new sound design and performance possibilities for both beginners and experienced users. Well done Behringer!

Behringer’s UB-Xa D is Available Now!

[UPDATE: August 19, 2024] More than two years after teasing a desktop/rackmount version of the UB-Xa, the UB-Xa D is now available and shipping from Thomann.

UB-Xa D

Yup, that’s right folks! Over two years after teasing a keyboardless version of the UB-Xa, it has finally arrived and, is ready to ship from Thomann now.

The UB-Xa D packs all of the features of the original keyboard version into a compact, desktop box that can either sit on your desk or live in a 19″ rack! And yes, rack ears are included in the price. And that price is a rather spectacular $777.00 / £725.00 / 849.00€.

Every feature from the incredibly successful UB-Xa keyboard version has been packed into this unit. Simply hook up a MIDI controller keyboard, preferably one with polyphonic aftertouch (I’d recommend the KORG Keystage), and away you go. Connectivity at the rear is identical to the keyboard version. USB, 5-pin MIDI, 2 pedals, 3 switches and 4 audio outs.

And if you’re looking to fill up the 512 patch memory slots, why not check out these sounds featured in our weekly Sounds & Presets column?

[Original Post – February 24th, 2022] Behringer says in a Facebook post that while they are waiting for chips to arrive so they can ship the full-sized UB-Xa, the engineers have been working on the desktop version and here are the first photos.

It’s interesting to see Behringer moving on from the desktop format that they used for the Model D, Pro One and Wasp. It’s perhaps obvious that a polyphonic analogue synthesizer might need a bit more room and thought around the design. Cooling seems to be a factor judging by the grills and fan on the back.

Otherwise, it looks just like you’d expect it to with the familiar OB-Xa colouring and controls. You can see they’ve retained the split modes and also added an arpeggiator and sequencer.

No news on price or availability and there’s a long list of overdue Behringer synths that will hopefully start to emerge soon.

This looks like the form factor from my Deepmind 12 desktop.

Quick observation here why is the mono Jack between the left and the right wouldn’t make sense to pair the left and the right then put the mono Jack on the other side of the left, next the phones?

    >If they get this thing sounding really creamy, and it works( And listen I don’t care if it’s not a 1:1 ratio exact clone.)

How does this influence Sequential and the OB 6?..

As of right now they are not making any more for whatever reason unknown publicly.

Text labels are confusing and inconsistent. Even at a high level there is not even clear and logical naming of sections: some on top (filter section) and some on bottom (programmer section)

Is this the same person that screwed up the RD-8 pattern divisions?

Dear Behringer, make it or don’t. Years of have made this lose is allure for me. Love your model D. Better than the original except I’d rather have had reverb and delay instead of an overdrive and chorus fx units. Make your clones. Give us a ship date and price within $100 street price and musicians will love u for it. Hyping does no one any good

    Is it really worth $849

    Kevin says:

probably not, so many other choices for 16 voice analog synth modules at that price

    Really? Name one.

    Kool beans.

I’d personally pay at least £500 for a Behri clone of a SK-1 .. preferably in micro format like the JT-4 thingy
