Behringer Vocoder VC16: Here Come The Robots
Vocoder Module with 6 Synthesis Engines for Eurorack
The Behringer Vocoder VC16 is a complete vocoder with six digital sound engines in a Eurorack module. First shown in 2023, the module is now finished and ready to order.
Behringer Vocoder VC16
Behringer first announced the Vocoder VC16 on Facebook in 2023. Back then, the module was bright red. Meanwhile, they’ve decided to make the VC16 the same black color as their other Eurorack modules – a good choice in my opinion.
The carrier signal is generated by a digital sound engine with six oscillator types. You can choose from Triangle/Ramp, Square/Pulse, Multiple Wave, Noise, Vox, and FM. These can be tweaked using the Carrier Shape control or the corresponding CV input with an attenuverter. Alternatively, you can use an external carrier signal.
The modulator signal enters the module via the combined XLR and 1/4” input, which accepts microphone or line-level signals. You can further adjust the sound and response of the vocoder using the Formantand Envelope Sense controls.
Via MIDI (5-pin or USB-C), the vocoder can be played polyphonically. It also has CV/gate inputs for controlling the carrier, but in this case, it’s limited to monophonic sounds.
There aren’t many complete vocoder modules out there, especially at this price. If you want to add classic robot voices or vocoder choirs to your Eurorack performances, the Behringer Vocoder VC16 looks like a great fit.
Price and Availability
You can now order the Behringer Vocoder VC16 from Thomann* for $85 / £80 / €98. According to Behringer, the module is now shipping from the factory, so it shouldn’t be too long before it shows up at the dealers.
