Behringer WAVES: Tides-Inspired Waves of Modulation
Digital Function Generator for Eurorack
Behringer WAVES is the next in a series of Eurorack modules based on Mutable Instruments designs. A clone of Mutable Instruments Tides, WAVES is a versatile function generator that can serve as an envelope, LFO, audio-rate oscillator, and more.
Behringer WAVES
After BRAINS, CHAOS, RADAR, and SURGES, Behringer has once again taken one of Mutable Instruments’ open-source designs and released it as a module of their own. As a copy of the 2nd-generation MI Tides (2018), WAVES delivers a wide spectrum of modulation curves – or “waves” that you can bend and shape in any imaginable way.
WAVES can be an AD or AR envelope, or you can use the loop function to turn it into a voltage-controlled LFO or digital oscillator. The Shape control varies the curve from linear to exponential to sinusoidal. Smoothness can even out kinks in the curve, but if you turn it to the right, a digital wavefolder will introduce additional peaks.
WAVES also features Tides’ four outputs, which carry various combinations and derivatives of the curve, depending on how they’re patched. The module syncs to an external clock or even an audio signal, which makes it possible to generate subharmonic frequencies from an oscillator signal, among other things. There’s also a trigger input.
Like the original, WAVES provides ample CV control over all parameters. In addition to a V/Oct input, there are CV inputs for Frequency, Slope, Smoothness, Shape, and Shift/Level, all of which are equipped with attenuverters.
