Deep Sea Diver: Benson Amps’ New Fuzz-Echo
Benson Amps unveils the Deep Sea Diver Fuzz-Echo, a signature pedal designed with Jessica Dobson
After three years of meticulous collaboration, Benson Amps has unveiled the Deep Sea Diver Fuzz-Echo, Jessica Dobson’s new signature pedal.
Deep Sea Diver
The Deep Sea Diver Fuzz-Echo is a signature pedal crafted with the band’s guitarist, Jessica Dobson. This signature stompbox blends her favourite fuzz tones with vintage echo textures into a versatile, compact unit.
“When Benson first asked me what I wanted out of a pedal, I asked if he could smash together my favorite fuzz tones and vintage echos,” Dobson stated. “One of my favorite pedal configurations has always been running my echos & delays before my dirt pedals to get unorthodox sounds. So, we started there and it morphed into a pedal than became bigger and wider than what we initially had imagined.”
Jessica Dobson
Dobson emphasized that the Fuzz-Echo transcends the typical “gated fuzz pedal with an echo feature.” She sought a pedal capable of delivering a spectrum of sounds, from “splatty gated sounds” to “wooly and straight forward” fuzz, and even the “gauzy My Bloody Valentine textures” she admires.
The pedal also functions as a treble booster for solos and can generate “a foreign landscape of oscillation and interrupting textures.”
Silicon Fuzz
The Fuzz-Echo features a silicon three-transistor fuzz variant, a “deranged mashup of mk1.5 and mk2,” meticulously tweaked by Benson Amps.
Its interactive “bias” and “gate” controls offer a wide range of tones, from aggressive treble boost to thick, textured fuzz, and the band’s signature gated skronk.
Echo
The echo section utilizes a modified PT2399 chip, perfectly tuned to complement the fuzz. Standard time, feedback, and level controls are included, and holding down the footswitch triggers sustained feedback, a hallmark of Deep Sea Diver’s sound.
A unique feature of the Fuzz-Echo is its switchable fuzz and echo order. By powering the pedal on while holding the footswitch, users can toggle between fuzz-before-echo (green LED) and echo-before-fuzz (orange LED), with the latter being Benson’s preferred configuration.
Benson Amps assures users that the Fuzz-Echo is compatible with any guitar, bass, or synthesizer and can be placed anywhere in the signal chain. While the pedal produces a slight hiss, even on cleaner settings, the company advises users to “play a guitar solo instead” of dwelling on it.
