It is that time of year again! Searching for sweet Christmas gifts for the guitarist in your life? What can you buy the musician that already has everything? Jef’s Top 10 Christmas Gifts for Guitarists

Us guitar players are a funny bunch. We love to ogle at new guitars and can talk for weeks about the latest effects pedals or the ‘must have’ guitar amp of the year. So when it comes to choosing Christmas gifts for us, it can all be a bit of a minefield for the person trying to find something to stuff our Yuletide stockings with – especially if they don’t want to spend a fortune.

1. ‘That’s a Sharp’ Mug

If the six stringer in your life is a work colleague and has a good sense of humour, the chances are they’re addicted to coffee! Sometimes the way to go with Christmas gifts for guitarists is to go with a music theme. My suggestion here would be something, simple like this ‘Thats a Sharp’* mug below. It’s cheap and makes a statement around the office: “I’m down with hashtags but cool enough to know what it really means outside the world of Twitter.”

Get one ordered now and it’ll be here in time for the dreaded Christmas office party.

RRP – GBP 7.36 plus shipping

2. Marshall Amp Keyholder

Next up is a gift for the absent minded guitarist in your life. This handy little gadget will keep their keys safe and provide them with some rock’n’roll style at the same time. The Marshall Keyholder* has classic British guitar amp styling, is relatively cheap compared to a real Marshall amp head and can be a nice talking point around the home or studio when his or her musician friends are over for a jam.

3. Fender Custom Shop Calendar

A perennial favourite for “I didn’t know what to get you” Christmas gifts is the calendar. So if you are going to go down that route at least make sure it is full of photographs of obnoxiously lavish and ultra-expensive guitars. The new Fender Custom Shop Calendar 2020* is a perfect fit. It’s not out for a few weeks, but if you get your order in now it will be here in time for Christmas. The only issue with this gift is that they will be drooling over Custom Shop guitars all year, so you may need to buy them some Kleenex to go with this one.

4. Blues Box Guitar Kit

If your guitarist is handy with a toolbox and loves to tinker, then my next suggestion could be perfect for you. The Hinkler Books The Blues Box Guitar Kit* will let them build their own cigar box guitar. That should keep them busy and out of your hair whilst they’re working on it.

But be warned: come Boxing Day, they may have built it. If you are still hung over you will probably want to murder them when they demonstrate “how great it sounds” for hours on end. The kit includes everything they need and a CD of how to play the thing once it’s finished. You may want to also order yourself some EarPeace* earplugs, just in case they complete the build whilst you are still at home!

5. Fender Bottle Opener

It’s Christmas and chances are the guitarist in your life will want a drink. What better way to break into your favourite beverage than a Fender Bottle Opener*. It’s practical, retro and stylish – all in one fell swoop! Plus, you can screw it onto your favourite guitar, guitar amp or kitchen cupboard for easy access.

RRP – GBP 11.82 plus shipping

6. Fender Amp Lunch Box

Carrying on with the food and drink theme, here’s the Aquarius Fender Black Tolex Lunch Box*! This stylish little lunch box is perfect for carrying your ham on rye to school or the office. Of course, you could put guitar bits in there instead, so it doubles up nicely as a little gig tool kit box. I think it is cute and would definitely use one to carry my lunch in.

7. Guitar Tech Service Station

For the tweakers and tinkerers that love to toy around with instrument setup and maintenance, you cannot go wrong with the Harley Benton Guitartech Service Station*. It provides a convenient and safe working area to improve your favourite guitar – and it also happens to be super cheap! I love that fact that it neatly rolls up for easy storage. It also provides a safe support for the guitar neck, and has 3 mm padding to stop the finish from getting damaged when you are working on it. This is great gift for players that gig as well, as it can be used on any flat surface.

8. Guitar and Bass Toolkit

Another Harley Benton Chirstmas gift here: the Guitar & Bass Toolkit* This one could be a perfect companion for the Service Station. Us guitarists always need new tools and to have them in all in one handy zip up pouch is perfect.

The kit includes:

  • 1 Steel ruler (15 cm metric and 6″inch)
  • 1 Wire cutter
  • 6-in-1 ratchet screwdriver with left / right function including 4 bits (Phillips 1 #, Phillips 2 #, slotted 1/4″, slotted 3 mm) and 2 hexagon socket inserts (1/4″ and 5/16″)
  • 14-Sheet thickness gauge (0.05, 0.06, 0.07, 0.08, 0.09, 0.10, 0.15, 0.20, 0.25, 0.3, 0.4, 0.5, 0.75, 1.0 mm)
  • 12 Hex keys (1.5 mm, 2.5 mm, 3 mm, 4 mm, 5 mm, 0,050″, 1/16″, 5/64″, 3/32″, 1/8″, 3/16″, 7/64″)
  • 1 Capo
  • 1 String crank

I personally like that it covers both Metric and Imperial sizes for the Hex Keys, as it means you can work on guitars made anywhere in the world.

9. Speedy String Winder

Here’s another handy tool: the Harley Benton Speedy Stringwinder*. This glorious little tool runs from a 750 mA Lithium-ion rechargeable battery and will make re-stringing a guitar a breeze. In a perfect world, you would buy your favourite guitarist one of these, a tool kit and the guitar tech station –  the perfect guitar setup kit! This string winder is cheap, very practical and I would love one as a gift. Winding strings is dull as dishwater and takes forever!

10. Amp Isolation Mat

Now, you may not know what this is unless you play the guitar. But, you will thank me later. The Harley Benton Amp Iso 1* is placed under a guitar amp and stops it from rumbling through floorboards. So if your darling guitarist is upstairs ‘practising’ you won’t get that annoying muffled version of ‘Purple Haze’ resonating through your home. It looks dull but believe me, these are great. Perfect for de-coupling low frequencies from your resonating floors. Oh, and it’s cheap as chips too!

RRP – GBP 24.83 plus shipping
