What were the biggest software highlights of 2021? Which plug-in, tool, or DAW ended up at the top of the Thomann sales charts? The list below shows which products took the top places at Thomann this year. There is also a comparison with the all-time most successful software products at Thomann, just because it’s interesting!
Best-Selling Software 2021 at Thomann
Recently, I presented my subjective best production software list of 2021. Here, you can see what people are actually buying! The lists below are sorted according to Thomann sales figures. They do not disclose exact sales numbers, though. These are meant for T’s trusty accountants to deal with!
10 – Softube Console 1 Mk 2
Softube Console 1 MK 2 is a controller to remotely control bundled plug-ins for mixing and mastering. We are talking about high-end software emulations and tools from Softube and Universal Audio (UAD) based on legendary gear. The tactile control adds a whole new dimension to mixing.
09 – Native Instruments Komplete 13
The all-in-one package Komplete 13 is chock full of old and new sound libraries, synthesizers, and effect plug-ins. Some of these products have accompanied countless musicians in their creative pursuits for over a decade! Now that Komplete went the subscription way, I’m sure it’s going to be around for even longer!
08 – Native Instruments Maschine Micro MK3
NI Maschine is a controller for dedicated beatmaking software. The Maschine Mikro MK3 is intended for beginners who want to enter the world of beatmaking. The MK3 is the best Micro controller yet, and the Maschine software keeps evolving at its own pace. Hence it’s earned its place in the list.
07 – Steinberg Cubase Artist 11
The next piece of software is a DAW that many famous musicians have trusted for countless years. Cubase plays an important role in the history of DAWs. That’s why it’s still a household name for anyone in computer audio. Cubase Artist 11 is meant for beginner DAW users and ones looking for an upgrade path to the more advanced Cubase versions.
06 – Sonarworks SoundID
Until you learn to compensate for deficiencies, the listening conditions keep determining the results you get from your home studio and headphones. While acustic treatment can get complicated, SoundID from Sonarworks helps calibrate the sound reproduction of your monitors and headphones by measuring your room’s acoustic response with the included measurement microphone. While nothing beats competent acoustic treatment, software like SoundID is a major step forward for home producers.
05 – Arturia MiniLab MKII
MiniLab MKII from Arturia offers a competent MIDI keyboard controller and a hearty selection of software instruments to get started making music immediately. The MIDI controller market has never been more congested, yet Arturia maintains a firm grip on it by consistently hitting the sweet price-to-quality spot.
04 – Image-Line FL Studio Producer Edition
I think it’s been nearly two decades since I first encountered Fruity Loops, yet FL Studio remains one of the most widely used DAWs in the world. And rightly so. It offers pretty much everything club music producers need, including the industry’s finest piano roll!
03 – Native Instruments Maschine MK3 Black
The sleek Maschine MK3 Black controller + software combo is mighty alluring. I’ve been out of the Maschine game for years now, but I keep eyeing the MK3 ever since its release. It looks great and it’s just a really fun (also structured) way of coming up with some bomb beats. Maschine lets you create complete songs and access a large library of sounds and instruments.
02 – Steinberg Cubase Pro 11
Unless you are invested in another DAW or recording system, Cubase Pro 11 is always a fantastic choice for the heart of your studio. The fact it’s a best-seller for Steinberg is just one way to prove it!
01 – Universal Audio UAD-2 Satellite TB3 Octo
The UAD-2 Satellite TB3 Octo Universal Audio DSP unit sold like hotcakes, which means fast CPUs and Thunderbolt connections aren’t replacing dedicated DSP processing anytime soon. It makes sense that manufacturers like UAD and Antelope keep dishing out interfaces with on-board FX, then!
All time software favorites at Thomann
Below is a list of the best-selling software products since Thomann was founded that are still available. As you can see, most entries from the Top 10 list above appear here, just in a different order!

Not a surprising list, kind of expected. Been concentrating on hardware more than software, but one fine util I bought was MTM’s Resonances elimination plugin, which is very good. Most of the stuff on Thomann’s list is ‘main hub’ software, DAWs, big synth collections etc. Obviously these things still have a big market alongside the hardware revival that’s going on.
Hey there,
thank you for a great article. A quick correction – Sonarworks software is SoundID Reference, not SoundID. SoundID is their consumer licensing tech that’s based on the PRO calibration technology but on top ads hearing and sound preference test and creates your personal SoundID profile.
