Black Salt Audio Oxygen: new exciter/de-harsher to get hyped about?
Black Salt Audio makes simple and satisfying plug-ins that hit mixes where it hurts most – out of control low-end, brittle top-end, and lack of punch. To that, products like LW CTRL (bass optimizer), Escalator (saturation), and the newly released Oxygen could be the tiny little helpers you want the most. Oxygen homes in on top-end harshness by employing compression, saturation, and filtering to tame those icy spikes. Here’s more about that and all else…
Black Salt Audio Oxygen
According to the blurb, Oxygen uses a specific process to control & enhance the top-end of tracks in a manner you won’t get from EQ alone. There are three processors manning the task at hand. The Oxygen processor lets you dial in how much you want out of its 3 modes – Bite, Presence, and Air. The built-in compressor has 2 modes – Punch (emphasizes transients & sharp attack) and Smooth (softened dynamics and gentle character). There’s also a Control knob which adjusts the compression applied to the overall sound. It sounds like lots of parameters are shifting behind the scenes while turning the knob.
A Side Enhancer, present in the Stereo version of Oxygen, lets you spread out the high frequencies of tracks and groups. Like most wideners tend to do, this works great on stereo busses such as overheads, vocals, and other instruments in need of oomph.
The Saturation control applies analog-style harmonics and imperfections to the high-end for a richer, warmer sound. It’s based on a tape saturation circuit tuned specifically for the high frequency spectrum. Additionally, the Width control found in the stereo version of Oxygen allows to boost the side signal of a sound in a very natural way. This can work great on stereo busses, giving extra width and shimmer to cymbals or other sources.
Oxygen looks and sounds like a competent audio sweetener capable of meaningful improvements (when used correctly). It does its thing with only the essential parameters at your disposal – “here’s this thing that sounds good, tell me how much you want of it.” Reviews of Oxygen are already up and a bunch of competent people are pretty stocked with it. Best grab the 14-day trial and decide for yourself!
