BOSS announce the new BC-1X Bass Compressor
The new BC-1X pedal is designed specifically for bass players. It is designed to keep your guitar’s tone intact and give you a studio quality compression effect in a Boss compact pedal.
The pedal has controls for Ratio, Threshold, Release, and Level, as found in studio compressors. A 16-segment gain reduction meter clearly displays the amount of compression. This is a really nice touch and is something that is common on a 19” rack studio compressor. I like how they have incorporated this into their new pedal. It’s always useful to check the metering on a compressor to see how it is working on your sound, using a visual reference.
The compression uses a multiband approach and so again the kind of thing you’d expect from a full sized studio unit. Boss use their MDP (Multidimensional Processing) proprietary engine to analyse your bass signal in realtime and apply the effect to the different frequencies.
I’m not sure how this will work, as normally you would have controls for each separate band, so it seems a big claim. However, if it works as they state it would really be something new in such a small pedal format. The MDP technology also keeps the noise floor down and helps to keep the bass guitars original tone intact, Boss claims.
