Boss DM-101: The ultimate analogue delay?
Could Boss have the ultimate analogue delay with the DM-101 Delay Machine?
The Boss DM-101 Delay Machine offers an analogue delay with digital control. Potentially, giving musicians the best of both worlds and maybe even the ultimate modern delay?
Boss DM-101
Boss has just announced the new Boss DM-101 Delay Machine and they are marketing it as “the ultimate analog delay“, which on paper it could well be.
Analogue & Digital
Internally, eight bucket chains or BBD chips are the basis of many analogue delays. These work together with a CPU that controls it and allows a total of 12 delay modes.
Stereo
The effect pedal works optionally in stereo, or standard mono, all with a completely analogue signal path.
In addition, there are digital advantages such as 127 user presets, tap tempo, carryover, MIDI control via mini-TRS and connections for external footswitches and an expression pedal.
Controller + control
The DM-101 is operated via the three footswitches On/Off, Memory and Tap. In addition, there are controls for modulation rate, depth and variation, delay time, intensity and volume and central control for the delay mode.
This is joined by pressure switches for the memory slot and tap division.
Verdict
Boss has a reputation for making great pedals and some of their delays are classics, therefore this could well be a killer delay pedal for the modern musician.
It sounds analogue, which is great and what users like. Then having all that extra control is just the icing on the cake and where it could really shine.
Check out the official demo videos below to hear it in action. It certainly sounds musical and I’m a fan of the simple control layout, which offers all those great options.
The price is about right for what it has to offer and Boss is certainly one of those brands I trust to make solid working gear for musicians.
