Boss Katana-Air EX: Take that Premium Boss Sound Anywhere
The Katana series has become legendary amongst professional and practising guitarists. This Boss Katana-Air EX borrows pre-amps from the stage amp series. But can you really get premium tones from a wireless amp? Let’s take a look…
Boss Katana-Air EX
Over the years, we’ve been blessed with many variations of the Katana series to suit many applications and budgets. However, this Katana-Air EX offers a 35-watt stereo sound from a totally wireless guitar amp.
Breaking it down, you get 10 different control knobs utilising the amp type, equaliser, multi-effects and tone settings. All supplied via twin 5-inch speakers.
You can also make use of an FS01WL wireless footswitch or EV-1WL expression pedal, sold separately.
That’s not all! From this Bluetooth amp, you also get indicator lights for:
- A & B Channels
- Power
- Bluetooth
- Delay
- Reverb
Speaking of effects, on offer are 5 pre-amp types which take inspiration from other Katana models. Moreover, these can be tweaked to your liking with 3 independent effects sections.
Utilising their ultra-low latency technology, Boss tell us that you’ll be able to access over 50 world-class effects via Boss Tone Studio. The app allows for vast customisation from visual amp structures and YouTube playback. Available on IOS and Android devices.
Designed for portability, the Katana-Air EX tips the scales at just 5.6kgs without batteries. Additionally, you get up to 7 hours of battery life with standard alkaline batteries. Whereas, if you invest in a Roland battery pack you can jam out for up to 16 hours!
From the rear of the Katana-Air EX, we can make use of a standard 3.5mm AUX-IN port, accompanied by a USB B port and 6.3mm line-out ports.
A Portable Replacement?
We already have a portable Katana on the market, however at 5 years old its replacement is welcome. With added versatility in a more powerful package. I wouldn’t get rid of your existing Katana amps just yet, but as a portable alternative, this Air Ex is certainly something to consider.
Anything in the Katana series is always competitively priced compared to its rivals. With these impressive features, buyers should expect to pay more of a premium.
