Charvel MJ San Dimas – New quilted maple top models from Japan
Charvel MJ San Dimas models announced from Japan
Charvel MJ San Dimas models come with quilted maple tops and some great specifications. Available in three finishes and with two variations of the fretboard.
Charvel MJ San Dimas
The Charvel MJ San Dimas models are all made in Japan and are the latest models from the brand. Each one comes with a fancy quilted maple top and an alder body. Specifications-wise, they are all very similar, with the main variation being which fretboard material they use.
Maple or Pau Ferro
The MJ San Dimas Style 1 HSH FR QM models are available in two versions, one featuring a maple fretboard and the other, a Pau Ferro fretboard. The bolt-on, graphite-reinforced maple necks come with a 12″-16″ radius, plus 24 Jumbo frets with rolled fingerboard edges. Plus, they all have that super smooth hand-rubbed oil finish that makes them feel really slinky.
HSH
Pickups for all three models are a set of Seymour Duncans with a Jazz SH-2N humbucker at the neck, a Flat Strat SSL-6 single-coil in the middle position, and a JB TB-4 in the bridge. These are controlled by a volume, tone, and a 5-way switch.
Each guitar has a recessed Gotoh GE1996T Series Double-Locking tremolo, with a set of Gotoh die-cast tuners, and a Floyd Rose 1000 Series locking nut.
They all come with a Charvel Multi-Fit Hardshell gig bag.
Verdict
I like the specifications of all three models, and it is interesting to see Charvel using Pau Ferro rather than rosewood for the fretboards. Pau Ferro is a great wood for that job, but many players are hung up on rosewood, so it might deter some potential buyers. Apart from that the Gotoh locking trem system is a great choice as are the Seymour Duncan pickup choices.
Overall, these are pretty well-thought-out modern, shred guitars and if you like quilt maple tops, then they could well be for you.
