Charvel Pro-Mod So-Cal finish options expanded
Charvel Pro-Mod So-Cal models have just had the finish options expanded for this year. They are now available in some pretty sweet colours for 2023 across a variety of their popular high-spec models. Featuring either maple or ebony fretboards. Each one comes with a Floyd Rose trem system perfect for dive bombs and still offering rock-solid tuning.
Pro-Mod So-Cal HSS
The Charvel Pro-Mod So-Cal Style 1 HSS FR is now available in a Pharoahs Gold, Ferrari Red or Lambo Green Metallic finish.
These HSS layout models are pretty versatile and have all the classic Charvel features you would want for modern guitar playing.
This version comes with an ebony fretboard which suits the colours well and has a modern 12″-16″ compound radius fitted with 22 jumbo frets. Plus they each have the standard Charvel maple neck with the hand-rubbed Satin Urethane finish and an alder body.
As ever these models all come equipped with a Floyd Rose 1000 locking bridge and nut system.
HSS
This model is equipped with a Seymour Duncan Distortion TB-6 humbucker in the bridge position, and the Seymour Duncan Custom Flat Strat SSL-6 in the middle and neck positions.
They have a single Volume control and a No-Load Tone control, plus a 5-Position Blade switch with the following settings
- Position 1. Full Bridge Pickup
- Position 2. Bridge Inner Coil and Middle Pickup
- Position 3. Bridge Outer Coil and Neck Pickup
- Position 4. Middle and Neck Pickup
- Position 5. Full Neck Pickup

Pro-Mod So-Cal Style 1 HH FR M
Next up are the Pro-Mod So-Cal Style 1 HH FR M models. They have similar specifications to the HSS models above, except they are twin humbuckers and a maple fretboard.
The finishes this year include Snow White, which comes with a gold anodised pickguard, plus gold hardware, Infinity Blue with a 1-ply parchment pickguard and finally Gloss Black with a 1-ply mirror pickguard.
The pickups are a Seymour Duncan Distortion SH-6N in the neck position and a Seymour Duncan Distortion TB-6 in the bridge position.
This time they have a Volume with a Push/Pull Coil Split and No-Load Tone.

Charvel Pro-Mod So-Cal HH FR 3TSB
Then there is the new Charvel Pro-Mod So-Cal HH FR 3TSB and personally, I really like this finish. You know it can shred, but it still has that classic finish associated with vintage Fender guitars, etc
This model has an alder body with a Three Tone Sunburst finish matched with black hardware throughout. Again, this model has an ebony fretboard, but this time it is an HH layout.
Pickups are the same as the HH models above with the Seymour Duncan Distortion SH-6N in the neck position and a Seymour Duncan Distortion TB-6 in the bridge position.
A great-looking guitar and has all the benefits of a modern-day Charvel, as do all these guitars. This gives players rolled fretboard edges, truss rod adjustment at the heel, and bolt-on with graphite-reinforced maple necks, etc
MSRP – EUR 959 *
Verdict
I own a modern Mexican-made Charvel and I really think that it is a workhorse instrument. These new finishes and choice of ebony and maple fretboards are something I think are great.
Really must resist buying that Three Tone Sunburst model, as it is calling my name. Charvel is making some absolutely wonderful guitars for the money and these new finishes look like they will have a lot of admirers.
They have also announced a whole heap of hardtail models in new colours as well, so if you ‘fear the Floyd’, then you still have options.
