Charvel Pro-Mod So-Cal Style 2 with triple voiced pickups for extra versatility
A modern T-Style guitar with a set of super-flexible Fishman Fluence pickups
Charvel has just launched the Pro-Mod So-Cal Style 2, a high performance T-Style guitar series with some great features and specifications. And these guitars cost well under a grand. Available with the Gotoh Custom 510 two-point trem system and three voices per pickup, this new model has a lot to offer.
Charvel Pro-Mod So-Cal Style 2
The So-Cal Style 2 models have an ash body what has a scalloped lower back bout and shredder’s cut heel for comfort and better upper fret access. That should make these a smooth ride for any style that requires fretwork up at the dusty end of the neck.
The maple neck is a graphite-reinforced bolt-on affair, with 12”-16” compound radius and a lovely caramelised maple fingerboard fitted with 24 jumbo frets, pearloid dot inlays and Graph Tech TUSQ XL nut. And there’s super-handy Luminlay side dots, too. It has a reverse T-style headstock licensed from Fender. I think it suits the modern T-Style vibe very well.
Fishman Fluence
This model comes fitted with a set of Fishman Fluence Open Core PRF-COC humbucking pickups. A mini toggle switch flips between hot-rodded humbucking and more traditional PAF humbucker tones for each pickup, making this a very versatile guitar for many playing styles. But it doesn’t stop there. The tone control has a push/pull action that bypasses the mini toggle to activate voice three. That voicing gives a single-coil tone for the neck pickup, or slightly overwound single-coil tone on the bridge pickup.
Quality Hardware
The hardware includes a set of Charvel-branded sealed die-cast locking tuners, standard strap buttons and a two-point Gotoh Custom 510 tremolo. If you prefer a hard tail guitar, Charvel offers you the same version without the Gotoh trem.
The new Charvel Pro-Mod So-Cal Style 2 24 HH 2PT CM Ash is available in either Black Ash with black pickguard and black hardware or Natural Ash with black pickguard and chrome hardware. The hard tail version is available in either Satin Black with black hardware or Snow White with chrome hardware finishes.
My only gripe is the lack of stainless steel frets, but I still think that this new model has a lot to offer for its price point, so I can live without them.
Pricing: GBP 875
