Charvel Super-Stock DKA22 & Relic Series – Beauty or Beast?
Charvel has just announced a new limited edition Super-Stock DKA22 model is a stealthy black finish. Along with a new range of Pro Mod Relic Series San Dimas guitars with a distressed nitro finish. All are announced ahead of NAMM 2024, and due out later this year.
Super-Stock DKA22
First up, is the new Super-Stock DKA22 which is a limited edition model for 2024. This super sleek-looking shredder comes with an arched alder body, finished in a lovely, glossy black finish. It comes with a bolt-on, caramelised maple neck which is adorned with an ebony fretboard.
Seymour Duncan
This modern shredder comes outfitted with two Seymour Duncan humbuckers—a Custom Custom in the bridge and a ’59 in the neck position. Interestingly, it doesn’t have a Floyd Rose but instead comes fitted with a chrome Gotoh 510 tremolo bridge with vintage saddles.
It also features the classic and very iconic old-school “Toothpaste” Charvel logo, which is a nice touch. I for one think this a great-looking guitar, and as it is is made to shred. Those 22 jumbo frets and rolled fingerboard edges will certainly make this a super smooth ride.
Pro Mod Relic Series San Dimas
Next up, are the new Pro Mod Relic Series San Dimas series. They have been given a Distressed Nitrocellulose Lacquer finish, and are made to look well used. Albeit, on a budget and so you’ll notice a distinct wear pattern throughout all the finishes. This new range is available in either Red, Black, or White.
Pau Ferro
This model features a maple graphite-reinforced neck with a Pau Ferro fretboard, fitted with 22 jumbo frets, and the usual hand-rubbed urethane gel finish on the rear of the neck.
They come fitted with Seymour Duncan pickups – the JB TB-4 at the bridge and the ‘59 SH-1N at the neck position. These are controlled via a single volume knob and a three-way switch, so nice and simple.
Locking Trem
The recessed Floyd Rose 1000 Series Double-Locking Tremolo is perfect for dive bombs and should offer rock-solid tuning. As you would expect from a San Dimas model.
Beauty or Beast?
I think, for me, I would rather have the sleek-looking Super-Stock DKA22 model and wear it myself through playing. The new Pro Mod Relic Series San Dimas suffer from that “they all look the same” wear pattern, and that would probably annoy me, as it looks so fake.
Let us know which one you want in the comments section below.
