Cherry Audio P-10: A Dual Manual Legend is Reborn
Plus, Synth Stack gets updated to version 5!
Not ones to rest on their laurels, Cherry Audio bring us the P-10, recreating one of the giants of analogue synthesis minus the weight and heat issues!
How do you make a great synthesizer even greater? The common answer to this question has frequently been to take what you’ve got and double it. Before we had the Yamaha DX1, the Roland JX-10 or the ASM Hydrasynth Deluxe, there was the Sequential Circuits Prophet 10.
Double Trouble
Taking the doubling-up concept to its fullest extent, the original Prophet 10 had double 61-key manuals and was unashamedly large and heavy. But for those who wanted the sound of the Prophet 5 but more, it was the ideal, if somewhat unwieldy, solution.
In recent years, the current incarnation of Sequential has revived the Prophet 10 but without the extra weight and size, and they’ve done a remarkable job, it has to be said. But it is a premium, flagship synth with a premium, flagship price.
The Cherry Audio P-10
Now Cherry Audio, who only released Atomika last month, has delivered a beautiful software recreation of the original Prophet 10 in the form of P-10 and, as you’d expect, it costs a tiny fraction of either the original or the Rev.4 remake!
And, as always, Cherry Audio hasn’t just sat back and done a 1:1 copy. They’ve expanded the functionality whilst retaining everything that made the original so special. This means that instead of 2x 5 voice polyphony, you now have 2x 16 voice. There’s also support for channel and polyphonic aftertouch, which means even more expression for this amazing sound.
The Power of P-10
Cherry Audio have also expanded the modulation capabilities and added a couple of their excellent effects, as well as retaining and expanding the sequencer functionality of the original. The arpeggiator can be tempo-synced as well as be independently assigned to each layer.
For that added taste of authenticity, you can employ per-layer drift control, which gently changes the oscillator and filter settings for a genuine analogue feel. The Poly Mod function allows individual voices’ filter envelopes and Oscillator B to allow each voice to have its own modulation.
Accurate Modelling
Cherry Audio claim to have faithfully modelled the CEM 3340 oscillators and CEM 3320 filters so you can expect a precise and accurate emulation of the original. Having had some hands-on time with it, I can certainly vouch for that.
