COBALT8 Firmware update 1.1 brings 6 new algorithms
Modal Electronics has released an update for the COBALT8 virtual analogue synthesizer adding 6 new algorithms and numerous other workflow enhancements.
New Algorithms
Yes, please! New algorithms are always a welcome sight and this is one of the beautiful things about synthesizers with a digital architecture. COBALT8 already had 34 complex algorithms running through 2 independent oscillator groups that can be blended together.
The 6 new algorithms focus on FM and AM oscillation models complete with defined sculpting controls.
- FM Saw:Square: Frequency Modulation using a Sawtooth as the carrier and a Square as the modulator with full control over FM Depth and Modulator Frequency Ratio.
- FM Square:Square: Frequency Modulation using a Square as both the carrier and modulator with full control over FM Depth and Modulator Frequency Ratio.
- FM Tri:Square: Frequency Modulation using a Triangle as the carrier and a Square as the modulator with full control over FM Depth. and Modulator Frequency Ratio.
- Noise AM Saw: Sawtooth Wave amplitude modulated by a filtered noise source with control over AM Depth and Noise filter cutoff.
- Noise AM Square: Square Wave amplitude modulated by a filtered noise source with control over AM Depth and Noise filter cutoff.
- Noise AM Tri: Triangle Wave amplitude modulated by a filtered noise source with full control over AM Depth and Noise filter cutoff.
These are going to be interesting to explore, modulate, sequence and bit-crush. It certainly widens the sound palette into different directions.
Improvements
Modal has rolled out a number of other fixes and tweaks including improving the arpeggiator sync, beefing up the glide and giving the expression pedal a bit more expression. Modulation assignment has been tidied up, they’ve sorted out the re-trigger issues with S&H shape on LFO1 and fixed a few other things.
The MODALapp also gets an update with a refreshed look and feel and it can now handle future firmware updates for both the COBALT8 and ARGON8.
I’m always encouraged about the state of our industry when a company adds features to an existing product. The COBALT8 was already a great machine and this makes me an even happier customer.
