Cop a cranked Champ with Great Eastern Effects’ first pedal, the Small Speaker Overdrive
A classic amp-in-a-box solution?
UK based Great Eastern Effects has just released its first effects pedal, the Small Speaker Overdrive. The pedal is based on the classic sound of a close mic’d small vintage combo amp, the Fender Champ. This technique has been used on countless recordings, so it would be interesting to see how this new pedal fares.
Small Speaker Overdrive
The new Small Speaker Overdrive pedal from Great Eastern Effects aims to get you the tones of a vintage Fender Champ combo that has been recorded with a microphone up close to its speaker cone. This guitar tone is a classic recording studio technique that has been used to great affect on lots of recordings. The problem though, is that not everyone has access to a vintage Fender Champ. Or the recording space to crank one at volume to get these tones.
Simplicity
The Small Speaker Overdrive has controls for Level, Gain, and a High and Low EQ. This should make getting that tone a lot easier, and the simple control layout is welcome. You get both boost and cut with the High control, while the Low control only boosts the low end. The company describes its new pedal as a low to medium gain tone, which is exactly what I would expect from the amp it is attempting to mimic.
Amp in a Box
The product page describes the tones on offer to the types you would expect from players like Steve Cropper to Eric Clapton, Duane Allman and Joe Walsh. Listening to the official demo video, it is certainly in that ball park. So it could be a great amp-in-a-box solution for players in search of these classic guitar tones.
You can hear the Small Speaker Overdrive in action in the demo videos below, and order directly from the main site.
RRP – GBP 219
