Craig Anderton’s Amazing Multiband Helix Presets: Dynamic drive with added clarity
Based on the famous mid-80s Quadafuzz multiband distortion principle
The Craig Anderton’s Amazing Multiband Helix Presets pack is a set of carefully programmed, dynamic patches for the Line 6 Helix family based upon Craig’s famous Quadrafuzz from the mid-80s.
Craig Anderton’s Amazing Multiband Helix Presets
If any of you ever owned or tried out Steinberg’s Quadrafuzz plug-in back in the ’90s then you may know it was based on Craig Anderton’s mid-80s Quadrafuzz. He’s a bit of an all-round talent versed in guitar technique and audio engineering (who also contributes to this site with his series of cool production tips). The Quadrafuzz multiband distortion was famed for its clarity and response to your playing dynamics. I was a huge fan of this plug-in and from memory I’m sure it was our very own Robin at Gearnews that first told me about it back in the ’90s when we worked together at a large music retailer on Charing Cross Road in London.
The technology needed to make a pedal using this technology is fairly advanced and so far no one has really done a commercial version, either than PAiA Electronics, who created a do-it-yourself kit. But you’d better be good with a soldering iron for that one!
Line 6 Helix
This is where the Line 6 Helix comes in, which has the power and internal routing capabilities you need for this. Craig has taken his vast knowledge of multiband distortion and applied it to the Helix platform, bringing this plug-in to 2019.
So what’s in the package? You get 60 multiband presets, one for each current Helix amp model. The guitar signal is split into 2 to 4 bands, with each processed individually. Each of these presets has 8 snapshots, making 480 sounds total. And for serious customisation, another 60 presets (no snapshots) provide basic 4-band versions of all amps, with no additional effects. Another 6 additional clean presets are based on distorted amps with the Drive parameter dialled back. The final two presets are templates for creating your own multiband presets.
Overall, we’re talking about an insane amount of huge, dynamic drive tones. Not only can they give you greater clarity, there are also stereo sound possibilities on offer, too. Yes, you can also run it in mono and you will still benefit from the multiband programming. The pack also includes documentation on how to use, customise and get the most out of this innovative preset collection.
