Danelectro Spring King Junior: Surfs Up!
Danelectro Spring King Junior reissued as a compact stompbox
The Danelectro Spring King Junior reissues the 1999 spring reverb in a pedal, making it more compact for modern pedalboard rigs.
Spring King
The original Danelectro Spring King, debuting in 1999, gained acclaim for faithfully recreating the classic spring reverb sounds of the 1950s but in a compact pedal format instead of being confined to a combo amp.
Kick It!
This unique approach offered a distinct advantage: the Spring King housed an actual spring reverb tank within the pedal. Danelectro thoughtfully included a dedicated “kick pad” on the pedal’s housing, allowing players to get that reverb clank when the spring was disturbed and induce spring rumbles and wobbles with a swift kick.
Spring King Junior
The Spring King Junior is now being released, putting the same analog spring reverb in a more compact pedal format. The control set has been streamlined. While the original 1999 model featured three knobs – Volume (for wet/dry mix), Tone, and Reverb – the updated compact version omits the Volume control.
A small indicator light beneath the Tone knob illuminates when the pedal is engaged, so you can see when the spring reverb is in your signal path.
Compact
While streamlined, the Junior retains its predecessor’s characteristic warmth and subtle warbles. It is now more useable on modern pedalboard setups, as it takes up far less space. You can still kick it to get those reverb tank splashes if you want them.
Verdict
It is a handy spring reverb pedal and perfect for any player who wants that 50s and ’60s surfs-up reverb tone or something similar. Sometimes, these simple analog effects are just what you need in a world of digital emulations.
MSRP – USD 199
