Running in Native Instruments Kontakt or the free Kontakt Player plug-in, Substance is a “deeply produced” bass engine featuring mangled electric and acoustic basses, full live brass sections, sampled synthesizers, and experimental patches. Output has eschewed realistic emulation to come up with original, unorthodox sounds for adventurous productions.
Substance comes in at a substantial 300 presets handled by a 3-layer engine with Layer FX and Global FX. Each preset features 4 central macro sliders that are unique to it. Layers have dedicated monophonic and legato modes per layer. The Rhythm page lets you sync modulations and arps to tempo. All in all, a cutting-edge sound design tool that may be a bit on the expensive side, but the quality is definitely there.
Price and specifications
Substance will run you in EUR 199 with the three official Expansions thrown in for free. The expansions are Booty Bass, Base Bass, and Dystopian Bass. The offer is good until October 26. The instrument requires Native Instruments Kontakt 5, or the free Kontakt Player plug-in to function. Kontakt is available in all the usual plug-in formats for computers running macOS 10.9 and higher, or Windows 7 and higher.
