The magic is in the use of vactrols which can generate natural sounding movements in voltage without the need for power. We often see passive Low Pass Gates that use vactrols to do a similar thing, but with the VaCA you have a bit more of a handle over the depth of voltage control and a useful mixing feature.

The VaCA has two VCAs in the regular sense, each with a signal input and output and a CV in for controlling the depth via an envelope, LFO or sequencer. The incoming CV signals can be attenuated but the Depth knobs. The third VCA is used to mix the two modulating CV signals together, and you have a knob to control the balance between them. This then can create a more complex CV signal that can modulate the signal going through the third VCA.

More Information

The VaCA looks great. It’s clear, simple and has a nice range of features for something so useful. And being passive makes it cheaper and easy to drop into any case. They are handmade in Cheshire and available for £40.50 with a choice of knobs from the Decade Bridge Etsy store.
