Hip-Hop drums vs. rock drums?
While it could be argued that any set of toms and a bass drum could be used for any genre, there are certainly different sonic requirements for hip-hop or soul drums than, say, a thundering rock drum set. In my opinion, hip-hop beats sound more defined when played live, the toms are higher pitched, and the bass drum has a very punchy low end.
If you listen to what Questlove‘s or Jonathan Moffett’s drums sound like, you can get a sense of how different they are from rock or metal drums, just in terms of timbre. It may be missing a snare (which is a whole other story in terms of how a hip-hop snare should sound compared to a rock snare), but the new DrumCraft Urban Beat drum set has most of what you need to get started.
DrumCraft Urban Beat: Perfect for Hip-Hop?
The set includes three drum shells, a tom holder and a cymbal holder. The DrumCraft Urban Beat is perfect when space is limited. Its 20″ x 12″ bass drum may look small, but it’s more than enough to be the funky foundation of any hip-hop, funk or soul group.
The toms are a 12’x08′ rack tom and a 14’x13′ floor tom. The shells is made from 7-ply poplar shells with 45-degree bearing edges. Each drum also comes with Remo drumheads on both the batter and the reso side. And with its matte black finish, this drum set is pretty, too!
As this is a completely new series from DrumCraft, I wouldn’t be surprised if they added other set configurations and maybe even a matching snare drum down the line. But if you’re looking to get into drumming and all those rock and metal drum sets weren’t really your thing, this could be it!
