It’s the holiday season (soon), and Christmas is around the corner (sooner). So, it’s time for the old guessing game: what to get a drummer for Christmas? We’ve collected the best small and big things to get your drumming loved one and (hopefully) make them smile.

How to find the perfect Gift for your Drummer for Christmas

It depends. The perfect gift for a drummer for Christmas depends on quite a few variables. First and foremost, at what level are they playing at? Did they just start out, and their drum kit consists of shells and cymbals from a dozen different brands (no shade)? Then, a few pairs of drumsticks or a cymbal set might be an idea.

Does their drum kit look beaten, does it sound a bit broken? New drum heads and a drum key (or ten) might be an idea. Or do you really, really need that old rug back they put their drum kit on? Consider a drum rug! Have they started to play shows with their new band? Take a look at stick bags and protective bags or cases! Is their drum kit away from home in a rehearsal room? Maybe a practice pad will ease their pain.

Happy Drummer for Christmas: Drumsticks in all sizes!

This one is tough. Because it is one of the cheapest gifts for a drummer for Christmas. But drumsticks are also the most individual choice of them all. What feels good in one drummer’s hands will feel completely wrong, over- (or under-)sized, too light, or too heavy. Take a look at this comprehensive guide* at Thomann on all things drumsticks to get a better idea. And maybe try to find out what the drummer preferably plays.

Drum Keys and Tools: Keep your Kit in Tune

Drum tuning is the bane of many drummers’ existence, including this one. It’s such a pain to keep all lugs in tune with each other. But it’s well worth it. And it takes quite a but of practice. So, do take time, to find the sound you’re going for.

And also take time to search for your drum key – the guitar picks of the drummer world. So, it’s always handy to have one, two, ten spare drum keys ready, of the one you’re looking for is gone again. In addition, a handy drum tool offers you additional Allen keys at different sizes in case the standard one does not fit. And if you really want to get serious about drum tuning, there are a few tools that can help you with that.

Practice makes perfect: Practice pads and Drum books

Sure, nothing beats (except you) playing the drums on an acoustic or electronic drum kit. But you might be in a situation where you can’t really do that at home. Or the time of day might be restricted. Practice pads to practice your rudiments are the perfect solution for that. These might also be a good idea, if said drummer starts touring and needs something to warm up on.

When it comes to books for a drummer for Christmas, there are either those that focus on a particular style (like Samba, Jazz, or Metal), a particular technique, or songbooks. This very much depends on what the drummer is interested in and what level they play at. But an excellent drum book can greatly advance any drummer!

On the Road again: Gift ideas for the touring Drummer

Just to be clear, I’m talking about starting to tour. Because, if you’re playing 50 to 100 shows a year (or more), I’d assume you probably won’t need any of these gift ideas. But, let’s say you’re starting to play in other towns with your bands, or you live in a bigger city that has a variety of venues to play at.

Then, if you haven’t already (and you really, really should!), ear protection is the very first thing a drummer is giong to need. Wearing your old pair of Bluetooth ear buds or a pair of cans from your grandfather might do the trick at home, but on a sweary, smoke stage, five nights in a row, not so much. So, it’s either in-ear-monitors or earplugs.

In addition, there are these drum accessoiries a drummer (and an FOH engineer) is going to be thankful for. Starting with a stick back, so you don’t have to balance your spare set of drumsticks on your leg. Then, having a pack of Moongel damper pads ready to dampen overly resonant drums or a couple of cympads to quiet down your cymbals can make a big difference. Just like cymbal cleaner.
