dsp.coffee: Homespun boutique modules with a growing catalogue
dsp.coffee is a new boutique modular firm that just popped up in the States, supplying new designs and reworked Eurorack classics.
dsp.coffee
This is a new venture brought into being by developer and electronics fiddler proswell and designer nkurence. Their desire to keep themselves furnished with new and interesting modules has encouraged them to design and build their own. Now they’re able to share their growing range of modules with a broader audience. Although not too wide, they typically make small runs of 20-50 units for each project.
Let’s check out what they’ve got.
22 Deaf Chinchillas
This is an all analogue synthesizer voice based upon the CEM3340 VCO and run by ElectroSmoth’s analogue submodules. It has sine, triangle, saw and pulse wave outputs, FM inputs, both types of sync and pulse width modulation. The saw and pulse waveforms are normalled to the dual VCA. Following on they end up in the SSM2044 based dual filter which can happily provide plenty of self-oscillation.
Everything is patchable with itself and via external influence. It’s quite an overwhelming amount of modular squeezed into 12HP. I appreciate the glowing eyes of the chinchillas. Dsp.coffee only makes these in batches of 10, and they go for $350 each.
DRIP Stereo Multimode Filter
For this module dsp.coffee took the Mutable Instruments Ripple filter and reworked it along the lines of the After Later Audio Popple module that used two Ripples. DRIP then becomes a stereo filter module with separate 12dB/oct and 24dB/oct outputs with an additional bandpass output. You can modulate the left and right sides separately, and it enjoys a bit of self-oscillation when pushed to high resonances.
DRIP is $222.22 in 8HP.
YYS Attenuverting Matrix Mixer
YYS is a super simple and useful 4×2 matrix mixer with regular or inverted outputs. Each input can be routed to either output via a knob. Bipolar LEDs indicate level.
YYS is $77.77.
DPT – Multifunction Electron Temple
This is more of a development platform that gives wonderfully modular access to the Electrosmith Daisy Patch Submodule. It has 8 pots with CV inputs, 6CV outs, 2 gates in and 2 gates out, 4 channel audio and MIDI in/out. You could use it to build ideas, prototype new modules, and explore functions.
DPT is really for dsp.coffee’s internal use, but they will build you one if you’re interested for $350.
Custom Kraakenstuff 2HP ADSR
A good and simple 2HP ADSR envelope designed by Kraakenstuff, based on the “Fastest Envelope in the West” by René Schmitz. dsp.coffee says they’ve made 20 and won’t be making any more. $55.55.
Cool kits
In addition to the built modules dsp.coffee also has some kits on offer including a Quad Precision Mix Multiple and a Quad Signal Boost and Saturation module. These look great for beginners.
dsp.coffee has a small but interesting range of modules with a good bit of design flair and bags of potential. I look forward to more.
