If you’re looking for a great deal on an e-Drum kit, here are a couple of great suggestions catering to those on a budget and those who can splash a bit more cash. There’s also the fantastic Roand TD-50X drum module that is the centre of most of their top-of-the-line e-Drum kits.

EFNOTE 5 e-Drum Set

Japanese e-Drum manufacturer, EFNOTE, is fast becoming synonymous with producing smart, refined and well-designed e-Drum kits. They have definitely struck out on their own and set themselves apart from the market with excellent features and equally excellent build quality.

There is, without a shadow of a doubt, a clear Japanese design ethic going on. Clean, effortless and practical. And they don’t skimp on the features either. With 360º flat sensing, multi-sensor technology, EFNOTE drums feel and sound great.

The EFNOTE 5 drums are all birch wood shells with 2-ply mesh heads. The snare, the most nuanced drum in any kit, has 7 sensors alone, including an independent side rim sensor. Equally, the hi-hat pad features multi-optical sensing and a free-swinging top and bottom design.

The drum module is deceptively powerful for its size. It is so minimalist in design, with a metal chassis and brushed aluminium face plate. Underneath this gorgeous facade lies a truly authentic collection of drum sounds with great training features and superb connectivity.

Alesis Turbo Mesh Kit

I would never claim that Alesis e-Drums are just ‘budget’ e-Drums, but they do offer an excellent range of kits for those counting the pennies. Whether it’s for a beginner or maybe as a compact practice kit, the Alesis Turbo Mesh kit can do both with ease.

There was a time when kits like this compromised on the playing surface, but those times are long gone. As the name suggests, the Turbo has a full complement of mesh heads across the snare and three toms. All drum pads are 8″ in diameter and are single zone. Cymbals (hi-hat, crash and ride) are 10″ in diameter.

So the Alesis Turbo Mesh kit is very compact. This is made more so by the inclusion of the padless kick drum pedal and a slim but sturdy aluminium rack.

The drum module has 120 and 10 preset kits. There are 30 built-in play-along tracks and plenty of training functions. And once you’ve registered your Turbo Mesh kit on the Alesis website, you will receive a promo code for 60 interactive drum lessons from Melodics!

Roland TD-50X e-Drum Module

Rounding off this week’s article is the daddy of all e-Drum modules. The Roland V-Drum TD-50X resides at the heart of all of Roland’s top-of-the-line e-Drum kits. But you can have those sounds and control on any e-Drum kit simply by buying the module itself.

Using their patented Prismatic sound modelling technology, the TD-50X delivers the level of detailed sounds you might only expect from a massive sample-based drum plugin. But the chances are that with the TD-50X, you will never need a drum plugin again!

There are 100 drum kit presets to choose from and you can playback your own samples directly from an SD Card. All of these sounds can be run through a 3-band EQ and compressor PER PAD! There are three multi-FX processors with 30 different algorithms supplied. There’s also EQ and compression on the main outs.

As for connectivity, the TD-50X does not disappoint. 14x external trigger inputs, 3x digital trigger inputs, 8x direct outs and a pair of balanced XLR outs. There are audio inputs and headphone jacks as well as regular and USB MIDI. Best of all, the USB Audio output is a 10-channel affair for multitrack recording via a single, solitary cable.
