Samsung and Google have developed Eclipsa Audio, a technology that redefines spatial sound. It enables precise control of sound positions and spatial reflections to create an immersive listening experience. In any room. From 2025, Eclipsa Audio will be available on the latest Samsung TVs and soundbars, from the Crystal UHD series to the Neo QLED 8K models. The technology is designed to not only raise the standard of home cinema, but also provide an ‘enhanced’ alternative to established licensed audio standards such as Dolby Atmos.

Eclipsa Audio will also be integrated into selected YouTube content, giving content creators new opportunities for creating 3D soundscapes. Viewers with compatible devices will be able to experience this content in a new audio dimension.

To ensure quality, Samsung and Google are working with the Telecommunications Technology Association on a certification programme for devices containing Eclipsa Audio. The aim is to establish uniform standards for high-quality playback. This will ultimately make it easier for producers to create immersive music.

The development of Eclipsa Audio began in 2023 with the Immersive Audio Model and Formats (IAMF) project, supported by the Alliance for Open Media. This collaboration with companies such as Apple and Netflix could accelerate the adoption of the format. “We are proud to lead the industry by integrating Eclipsa Audio into our 2025 TV and soundbar lineup,” says Samsung’s Taeyong Son, kicking off the new format.

More Information

More technical details on Eclipsa Audio are expected to be revealed at CES 2025, which is now kicking off, to show how the new format could impact the audio world. With this technology, Samsung is focusing on a flexible and modern solution for the demands of future audiovisual content. And it has the hardware to back it up.

It remains to be seen, of course, how the new format will ultimately establish itself on the market. Nevertheless, a bit of ‘competition’ to an established format is never a bad thing.
