Electro-Harmonix Spruce Goose Overdrive – Bluesbreaker tones
Including Lift switch input gain levels and momentary latching
The Electro-Harmonix Spruce Goose Overdrive is the latest pedal from the New York-based pedal manufacturer and is being billed as a Bluesbreaker-like overdrive, with an amp-like response. But it also adds a few interesting tweaks to the drive formula.
Spruce Goose Overdrive
Electro-Harmonix’s new Spruce Goose Overdrive is described as offering a smooth, rich breakup that retains clarity and dynamics. Based on a Bluesbreaker-like overdrive tone and with a pretty simple control layout that consists of Volume, Gain, Bass, and Treble controls.
The two-band EQ section will both boost and cut frequencies and has an active Bass control so even though it is simple, it should also be pretty effective.
Lift
However, it also has a three-way Lift switch which selects between 3 levels of input gain. This works as an input boost, which EHX describes as goosing the front end of the drive circuit hitting harder and producing a more compressed, saturated tone.
This is possibly where the Spruce Goose will stand out when compared to other Bluesbreaker-style overdrive pedals.
Momentary Latch
The pedal is True Bypass and uses a Soft FSW with a latch and a momentary action. This allows the user to Tap the footswitch for a normal latching toggle on/off or press and hold the footswitch for a momentary blast of gain and boost.
Verdict
Another great pedal from EHX and one that has some interesting features, as the Lift switch makes for some variations of the drive tone, and having a momentary option is pretty handy for live work.
