Elektron Digitakt 8-voice digital drum computer interactive on-line demo
Elektron caused a bit of a stir at NAMM with the announcement of the Digitakt. It’s a square chunky box packed with an 8-track digital drum machine and oodles of sampling space. At the time details were a bit scarce. But now Elektron have released a load more details, a teaser video (below), pricing and availability. And a rather natty online interactive demo. They are open for pre-orders, should you put your money down?
Digitakt
First of all go here and have a play. You have to scroll down to the section with the red brick background that says “Digitakt Online Interactive Demo”. Below that is a black and white mock up of the Digitakt that’s completely playable. Hit play, choose from a handful of patterns and then get interactive with the sequence. Select one of the 8 drum tracks, hit record and put your steps in. There’s also 4 knobs controlling tuning, decay, volume and the sample used in your chosen track. It’s blissfully simple, a lot of fun and only a fraction of the power of the real thing.
Features
It is unapologetically a beat making machine. Building on Elektron’s legacy of drum machines the Digitakt is smaller, more defined, possibly easier to access and get beat making with. And it’s around half the price of their other products. It has 8 internal audio tracks with filter, LFO and distortion on each. 8 dedicated MIDI tracks with MIDI In/Out and Thru on the back. Delay and reverb are available on send FX. The sampling capability has 1GB of storage with 64MB of sample loading space.
And then there’s this Overbridge business. Overbridge is Elektron’s suite of software tools for connecting Digitakt to your DAW. The basic version comes with a sample manager and librarian, USB and audio over MIDI, DAW sync, and a sort of basic plug-in version for easy parameter tweaking and automation. The premium version, which is an extra €79, gives you a full-on plug-in version, ASIO driver support, 8 track audio streaming and the ability to store Digitakt settings in the DAW project.
In the end, it’s an Elektron built, digital sampling drum machine for only £659 which is going to make a lot of people very happy. They are making the first batch and pre-orders are available until they are sold out. Digitakt should ship in May. More information on the Elektron website.
