Erica Synths continues its mission to bring back the Eurorack modules by Hexinverter Électronique. Next up are four drum modules: Mutant Bassdrum, Mutant Snare, Mutant Hihats, and Mutant Clap.
Erica Synths Hexinverter Drum Modules
When Hexinverter Électronique folded in 2023, Erica Synths announced it would team up with the Canadian developer to bring back several Hexinverter modules in revised editions. The mission to resurrect Hexinverter began with Mutant Machine, Mindphaser, and the Mutant Brain MIDI to CV interface. Erica Synths also brought back the Mutant Rimshot module in 2024.
Now, the manufacturer has announced reissues of four classic Hexinverter drum modules. Inspired by TR-808 and TR-909 circuit designs, they offer extended controls and a much wider sonic palette.
Mutant Bassdrum is based on the 808 kick design, but offers a bunch of extras not available in the original. Thanks to a built-in, CV-controllable distortion circuit, the module can produce sounds that go far beyond classic 808 bass drums. Pitch and decay are also CV-controllable.
While it also takes clues from the 808, Mutant Snare pushes the sonic boundaries perhaps even further than the bass drum module. The Tone control lets you blend two sine waves with different pitches, providing a wide range of options for the body of the snare. The snappy component comes from a white noise generator shaped by a CV-controlled bandpass or highpass filter.
Mutant Hihats delivers classic 808-style hats, but also offers extended sound shaping options. The internal noise generator can be replaced by an external audio signal. There’s also a Drive knob for overdriving the VCA to create gritty, distorted hi-hat sounds. The closed and open hi-hats can sound simultaneously, and there’s a switch that lets you select how they interact with each other.
In contrast to the three other modules, Mutant Clap is inspired by the TR-909. However, a pitch control for the noise generator lets you dial in sounds that sound nothing like a 909 clap. Like Mutant Hihats, this module also has an external input that takes the place of the internal noise. There’s even a built-in reverb effect with CV-controllable decay. According to Erica Synths, Mutant Clap can even double as a chiptune-style VCO.
All four Hexinverter reissues by Erica Synths are 13 HP in width. They’re now available as individual modules or in a bundle, although I wonder why the bundle doesn’t include the Mutant Rimshot module released last year.
Price and Availability
The revived Hexinverter drum modules from Erica Synths are now available for €180 plus tax apiece. The bundle of four modules is €600 plus tax. You can already order the Mutant Bassdrum and Mutant Snare modules from Thomann*.
