EVH Frankenstein Relic Series: How much?
New Red, Black and White models announced for September
The new EVH Frankenstein Relic Series offers a stripped-back and worn-in look for a basic SuperStrat and could be perfect for anyone who doesn’t want the hassle of making their own.
Frankenstein Relic Series
The idea behind the EVH Frankenstein Relic Series is to offer a basic utilitarian Floyd Rose-equipped SuperStrat with a worn-in look. I’m sure it was a good idea on paper, as not everyone wants to build their own guitar. However, this is quite an expensive way to get a Frankenstein Strat that was made in Mexico.
Specifications
The model is available in basic Red, White or Black finish, they all have some relic ageing and aged chrome hardware, to give them that well-used look.
It is a basswood body and a quartersawn modified “C” profile maple neck with a compound-radius fretboard. The fretboard is also aged and has that smooth finish associated with this style of guitar.
Wolfgang
They come with a single Wolfgang humbucker and a single volume knob, labelled Tone, plus a dummy neck pickup and switch in the single-coil pickup cavities. Just like Eddie’s original FrankenStrat had in his Van Halen days.
It also has a Floyd Rose locking trem and an EVH D-Tuna for dropped D tuning on the fly.
It is a well-known look and many guitarists choose to build their own out of parts. I made one out of old parts and wrote about it here.
Verdict
I do love a Frankenstein-style SuperStrat, but for me, these are pretty expensive at nearly £1.5k each. It is a lot of money for such a basic guitar and one that has already got lots of competition already out on the market.
These new models are due out in September 2023. Hopefully, the street price is more reasonable, as they should be under £1k in my opinion.
I reckon the recent MIJ Wolfgang models, though more expensive, are better value for money and more versatile.
