EVH MIJ Series Signature Wolfgang: Stealth Black & Ivory
The Japanese-built EVH Wolfgang is here
The EVH MIJ Series Signature Wolfgang model has been long-awaited by fans of the Wolfgang guitar. Priced between the Mexican and USA-built models, this Japanese model is closer to the American-made high-end model.
EVH MIJ Series Signature Wolfgang
The EVH MIJ Series Signature Wolfgang is available in Ivory and Stealth Black finishes, each with cream body binding, black knurled control knobs, chrome eye hook strap buttons and black headstocks.
Both models share the basswood body and Big Leaf maple top, as well as a bolt-on quartersawn maple 25.5” scale length neck.
They also have that 12”-16” compound radius ebony fretboard fitted with 22 stainless steel frets. The neck also has that lovely smooth hand-rubbed satin urethane back finish.
Dots or Blocks?
The Stealth Black version has pearloid dot inlays and the Ivory model comes with classy looking pearloid block inlays.
I’m torn between which one I would choose, as they both look very nice to me.
Dive Bomb!
Other key specifications include the EVH-branded Floyd Rose locking tremolo fitted with an EVH D-Tuna, an R2 locking nut and a heel-mount truss rod wheel.
They also sport the EVH Wolfgang Alnico 2 bridge and Alnico 3 neck humbucking pickups.
The Devil is in the Detail
Controls are to Eddie’s specifications and include a reverse-mounted three-way toggle switch and a kill switch.
The volume knob uses a custom designed EVH BI Tech HPU low-friction pot and treble bleed circuit, while the tone knob has a Bournes high-friction pot to stop players from accidentally knocking the setting.
I am always in awe of how much Mr Van Halen brought to the table with guitar innovation, and for me, the Wolfgang has always been a super well-thought-out instrument.
Each guitar comes in an EVH Wolfgang hardshell case, with an EVH leather strap and dog leash strap/eye-bolt brass clasps.
Verdict
Japan makes some stunning high-quality guitars and I am guessing that these new models will be a hot ticket item for many Van Halen fans.
There have been a few Japanese versions of the various Wolfgang designs made in the past and so I am very happy to see this Signature Wolfgang in production.
Eddie’s design is great and it will be nice to have a high-quality, yet more affordable version of this workhorse guitar available for guitarists.
