Expressive E returns with another Expressive Suite, this time for Myth, and a unique violin library, Jasmine Strings, from Wrong Tools.

Myth Expressive Suite from Expressive E
Expressive E continue their brilliant line of Expressive Suites with this new set for the Dawesome Myth from Traktion. Myth is a wonderfully different synth that uses resynthesis to generate its sound. Drag and drop samples into one or both iris’ and Myth does some powerful machine-learning manipulation to resynthesize the sample into something new.
Because of its MPE capabilities, Expressive E have worked their magic to come up with three banks of 100 sounds each which make the most of all of Myth’s impressive MPE capabilities. Naturally, Expressive E would love it if you were using their ground-braking Osmose synth to do this, but the best thing about these suites is that they are not Osmose-exclusive products!
As long as you have an MPE-capable controller, you will be able to benefit from these sounds. Better still, if you don’t own the plugin, Expressive E has a bundle that gives you both the plugin AND the three sound banks for a substantially discounted price.

Jasmine Strings from Wrong Tools
It might not be the best idea to name your sample library company ‘Wrong Tools’, but maybe there’s a bit of reverse psychology going on here. Either way, for me personally, Wrong Tools has flown well underneath my personal radar, so I was delighted to be introduced to them via their latest release, Jasmine Strings.
Based in Norway, They have been churning out some very interesting and different sample libraries for Kontakt, covering pianos, strings, percussion, drums, synths and more and all with a healthy dose of Scandinavian quirkiness.
Jasmine Strings is a collection of 12 violins sampled and processed in Kontakt, but these are not your everyday violin samples, and that is what I found so refreshing and intriguing about them. Jasmine Strings are those off-kilter, sometimes jarring but ultimately pivotal violin sounds you hear in game, TV and movie soundtracks.
These are the sounds that set a regular soundtrack apart from one that dares to venture beyond what is expected. And I love them! In isolation, they may sound odd and potentially ambiguous in their tone, but add these to something, and they truly deliver something unique and inspiring.

Minotaur – Presets for Arturia’s Mini V from Reverb Machine
Reverb Machine, aka Dan, is back with yet another brilliant bank of affordable sounds, this time for Arturia’s Mini V Minimoog recreation. As the bank’s name implies, these are 80 big, beefy and dark sounds for this classic software incarnation of the revered classic.
Focusing on monophonic sounds and therefore staying true to the nature of the original, Minotaur makes a lot of use of the Drive and Feedback controls within the plugin. Minotaur contains, as one might expect, a collection of mostly lead and bass sounds, although there are a few polyphonic patches to spice things up.
As well as the Drive and Feedback, Dan has made good use of the Mini V’s built-in FX section and macro facility. To use these sounds, you’re going to have to own the latest Mini V4 or Arturia’s Analog Lab, be it the Pro or free Play version.

Brandon Coleman Signature Sound Bank for Nord Stage 4
Brandon Coleman is a man of many talents that include composing, producing and arranging with some of the finest names in the business, including Babyface, Flying Lotus and Donald Glover. He is widely regarded as being at the vanguard of modern jazz and funk fusion.
As with many pro-players and performers, he is an avid user of Clavia’s Nord range of keyboards, including their seemingly omnipresent Nord Stage, now in its 4th iteration. And it is for this instrument that he has created a small but free bank of sounds.
There are some really cool sounds in this bank that really show off the incredible versatility of the Stage 4 and go a long way to explaining why we see this instrument on more stages than many others these days. It’s a real player’s instrument, and Brandon’s sounds go some way beyond what you’d expect from it.

Sky Lines for Xils-Lab ‘The Eighty’ from Vicious Antelope
We’ve featured Vicious Antelope in this column before and now they’ve jumped on the Xils-Lab “The Eighty” wagon with a cracking collection of pad sounds for this expanded recreation of the classic Yamaha CS-80.
I can’t tell you how refreshing it is to hear this instrument do stuff other than the typical Vangelis sounds that every CS-80 recreation cannot seem to avoid. Whilst there IS a distinct vintage and sci-fi feel to many of these sounds, and I hope I don’t offend the programmer here, these are not just another bank of Blade Runner patches!
The original CS-80 was capable of so much more than what we typically associate with it and it is unfortunate that it bears the weight of Vangelis’ masterpieces around its considerable neck, but with an instrument like “The Eighty”, which goes way beyond the original, it’s very welcome to hear a sound designer resist the pull of expectation.
