Fender boosts Player Series with short-scale Duo Sonic, Mustang and Mustang Bass
Mustang and Duo Sonic models revealed
Fender has now officially added two Mustangs, two Duo Sonics and a Mustang bass to the Player Series line-up, after we had a sneak peek of them earlier this year. The series was launched with Player Lead II and Player Lead III models during Winter NAMM, so these new short scale models are a welcome addition to the range.
Fender Player Series Duo Sonic
The new Fender Player Duo Sonic models come in both a dual-single coil configuration, or as a humbucker/single coil setup, all wired via a master volume control, a master tone control and a three-way pickup switch. The humbucker model has an extra coil-split option. Neat.
Both models feature a C-shaped 24″ scale-length maple neck, with a 22-fret, 9.5-inch radius and a maple or pau ferro fretboard, depending on which finish you opt for. The Seafoam Green comes with a pau ferro fretboard; the Tidepool or Desert Sand models both come with a maple fretboard.
RRP – GBP 549 / USD 599
Mustang
The two new Mustang models come as either two single coils or two P90s, As with the Duo Sonics, this option is about giving you more choice in terms of tones, here Fender is offering P90s instead of a humbucker. Again, these are short-scale 24″ necks with either maple or pau ferro fretboards, dependant on the finish that you choose. The 9.5″ radius have 22 frets.
The Sonic Blue, Sienna Sunburst or Firemist Gold finishes are paired with a pau ferro fretboard, while the P90 version comes in Aged Natural or Burgundy Mist Metallic, both with a pau ferro fretboards. The Seafoam Green finish is combined with a maple fretboard.
RRP – GBP 549 / USD 599
Mustang Bass
Last up is the new Mustang Bass, with a 30″ scale length making it another short-scale model. The C-shape maple neck has 19 frets and a 9.5-inch radius. There’s a P bass-style split single coil in the middle position and a J Bass-style single coil in the bridge position all wired via a master Volume, a master Tone and a 3-way switch.
The Firemist Gold and Aged Natural both come with a pau ferro fretboard, while the Sienna Sunburst version comes with a maple fretboard.
RRP – GBP 599 / USD 649

I can vouch for the Duos. I have several of varying ages, including one of these brand new Players.
Don’t write it off as a student guitar: small and light, but packs a good punch. Excellent necks. Decent tones.
