California Vintage Limited Edition: Antigua Finish

A big year for Fender, what with the 70th Anniversary of the Stratocaster, they’ve still found some time to pay attention to other models. The California Vintage line of Acoustics will benefit from this Antigua finish. Moreover, the three guitars in this line up all come with an included vintage-style hardshell case.

If you like the finish but want something to shred on, we looked at some Squier Antigua models earlier this year.

Malibu Antigua

Having bought one of the original Malibu acoustics a number of years ago, it’s nice to see that the model is still getting the attention it deserves. True to tradition, we’ve got a concert size body, with solid ovangkol back and sides; overall giving a balanced sweet sound.

We’ve also got a short 25 inch scale length, which will give this guitar a warm response and a comfortable feel. Aiding the comfort is a modern ‘V’ shaped okoume neck.

Fender are going for the whole vintage vibe with this series, therefore we’ve also got pearloid block inlays that sit upon a bound ovangkol fingerboard. Overall, combined with these warm woods and short scale length, this will be an ideal gigging companion for those unfamiliar with acoustics.

Preamp Pickup system for all

The Malibu, King and Palomino Antigua guitars all benefit from the tried and tested Fishman Presys VT Plus preamp system.

Sound hole mounted control dials allow access to a faithful sound of the guitar’s natural harmonics. Fender say that this will be useful for recording, or playing into an amplifier .

This dreadnaught King model features an inline headstock, nodding towards Fender’s classic designs dating back to the 50s. The tuners themselves are vintage style, for aesthetics and reliable intonation.

Performance Orientated

Conclusively, these Antigua models all come with Fishman electronics, and offer plays the choice between dreadnaught, concert and auditorium sizes. All of which benefit from Fender’s innovative Performance X bracing pattern.

Pricing and Availability

You’ll have to watch out for these, as they won’t be available until August 2024, which isn’t too far away.

What we can tell you though, is how much they’ll cost:

  • Limited Edition California Vintage King$899.99 / £779.00 / €899.00
  • Limited Edition California Vintage Malibu Antigua – $899.99 / £779.00 / €899.00
  • Limited Edition California Vintage Palomino Antigua – $899.99 / £779.00 / €899.00

Realistically, they’re closely matched in terms of specs, and identical regarding pricing. Buyers will have the chance to select exactly which style they need, without the fear of missing out.
