Fender Custom Shop’s Ron Thorn builds a $10,000 one-off Meteora
Fender’s Meteora design was first launched back in 2018 to a storm of interest (it was among our most-viewed posts that year) and was seen again the following year in an HH version. Now Fender’s Custom Shop has issued a one-off Master Built edition of this futuristic-retro design that’s way outside the budget of most players…
Fender Custom Shop Masterbuilt Ron Thorn Meteora
The Meteora saw the light of day with Fender’s announcement of its Parallel Universe and Alternate Reality models. Its aesthetic combines a retro ’50s-inspired shape with futuristic design cues, and was a big talking point in online guitar communities.
Master Built
Now Custom Shop master builder Ron Thorn has come up with his own take on the design, the first time that Fender’s Custom Shop has attempted this shape. The Meteora has an ash body with a Closet Classic White Blonde nitro-cellulose finish. The neck is a ’60s C shape quarter sawn maple affair, paired with a nice dark rosewood fingerboard with Pearloid block fret inlays. It has 6105 frets fitted to its fairly modern 9.5” neck radius, so it should play smoothly and choke-free when you bend.
The pickups are a TV Jones Classic and Classic Plus wired via a three-way blade selector switch, with a single volume and tone setup. Expect some Gretsch-like tones from his guitar.
This is a one-off model available through a store in Canada, but it isn’t exactly cheap. You may want to opt for a regular version instead, at a fraction of the cost of the Master Built version…
